I've recently stumbled onto a nifty little tool that the FPS and MMP genre-playing folks have known about for some time : Xfire - http://www.xfire.com

I need to do a little more testing, but Xfire supports in-game chat with SHIII and SH4 (not a feature I'm especially fond of, getting ready to blast that juicy tanker and having an IM-like window pop up in-game with someone asking me questions) ... But at least it may be method of arranging multiplayer games.

If anyone has experience with Xfire and knows whether SH4 can be launched and/or connected to through it, we may have a viable alternate to UBI's funky multiplayer interface.

Thoughts?

Xfire is great when playing online with my brother, we use the voice chat feature to keep in touch & organise our attacks on the enemy :D

As for being able to join servers directly through xfire, I know that when my hamachi server is up & running & my brother checks my status on xfire, it does show my hamachi ip address but I don't think he's able to join my server by clicking on it. I'll check for sure next time we have an online game & see if it is possible or not.

I see that with Xfire, "Xfire in-game" is supported (chat and screen-shot posting), but the "one click join" feature is not. "One click join" allows the Xfire user to join a supported game directly from the Xfire interface.

Nice to know that a server run through Hamachi can be detected by Xfire, but that seems a bit redundant to run both programs. (sigh)

I'm actually a fan of the "Xfire in-game" capability. For longer MP games, like Sh4 would tend to be, having just a chat interface (vs voice, needed for shooters and flight sims) works fine, and it's great how seemlessly it works with the game.

On top of that, you can take screenshots from the game and upload them to your Xfire profile (check out mine (http://www.xfire.com/profile/xanderf/) as an example), and it also tracks how much time you spend playing various supported games. Kind of a neat capability.

I'd actually posted a thread over here on the forums (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=113235) requesting the ability to add our Xfire information to our profiles, along with ICQ, Yahoo messenger, etc.
