I was getting random semi frequent hard locks in which about half the time the sound would also hang on the last tone being played. Sometimes it would sound like static. After this happened I had to do a full shutdown and restart. Hitting reset didn't even always work. I've heard a few times of others with similiar problems, and people suggesting it might be due to (suprise suprise) the soundcard, specificaly SB Live sound cards and possibly older Audigys. I'm just posting this to confirm that getting rid of the SB Live and switching to my built in motherboard sound FIXED THE LOCKUPS! Woot!. So fun now.
