I'm working on getting SH4 integrated into Hyper Lobby. First step is to get the game into the HL creator's hands so he can poke through it and see if HL will even work with SH4 (I have no doubt it will). Once SH4 is integrated into HL, we will have a much nicer venue from which to launch multiplayer sessions.
In the meantime, try not to get too frustrated at the current state of SH4 multiplayer. Hone those skills with war patrols and be ready to show all those sea-quake players what a real submariner can do. ;)

Never give up!!!
I run a SH4 server here at "The Lair" with no issues since 1.2.
I have a router, I make sure the ports are set correctly to host.
Make sure to set your router with the following rules:
***ALLOW PORT FORWARDING***
TCP | 80
TCP/UDP | 3074
TCP/UDP | 3174
TCP/UDP | 3074-3174
If you have a firewall, make the application an exception, and the ports.
This is how I configure the router I am using. I know it works well online and for LAN set-up. No one in our group has had connection issues with my server.
Hope this helps.

Some of us are working on getting Hyper Lobby to host SH4.
If that happens you can be certain that they will make sure it is stable and playable.
I have been using hyper lobby now for nearly 7 yrs and I cannot say anything bad about them.
The only glitch that came up was the fact that they were putting spyware onto your system in order to probe you.
This was not the case, my gut feeling tell's me it was a jellous competitor trying to cause them greif in order to feather their own nest.
So don't be discouraged as of yet, it's worken.
Subroc and I have been discusing it, and you can find info on the Multiplay section of the forums reguarding this.
Although it is in it's infancy, hopefully it will pick up momentum, I personnally have all the versions of SH from 1-4 and I love the game, but as you mentioned Ubi has always fallen short of the mark.
I think it's about time to allow someone with soem Multiplay server experiance to handle this and get a new and better community up and going.
I know it sounds like a pipe dream, but all great journeys begin with the first step.
Please no Offense Subsim you guys are great for allowing us to come here and form a community , this is the only way things can get done it sems at times.

Once I deleted hamatchi, I found that I could both host, and join games through the UBI MP interface.

If you have Hamachi installed and its causing you issues you need to goto network settings, advanced, advanced settings, in the connection window make sure that Hamachi is below your default lan, wireless connection. Just select and use arrows on right to move up or down. That window shows the order of preference and it has caused me issues found fix in hamachi forum.
