View Full Version : So many targets, so few torpedoes...

So there I am, patrolling the East China Sea, minding my own business when I get task force contact report. Being the inquisitive and aggressive sort, I plot an intercept and take a look. Here's what I find:

You can't even see all the ships...

2 Kongo class battleships
1 Fuso class battleship
2 Takao class heavy cruisers
1 Maya class heavy cruiser
1 Kuma class light cruiser
1 Naka class light cruiser
2 Large modern tankers
3 Akizuki class destroyers
2 Mutsuki class destroyers
1 Minekaze class destroyer
1 Asashio class destroyer
1 Shiratsuyu class destroyer

I only had 9 torps left so over the course of four hours I got both Kongos and the Kuma.

So what is the largest convoy/task force you've ever attacked during a war patrol?

I think I have seen this convoy. I had two aircraft carriers with mine. These are the two I went after. Sunk one and a DD who got in the way. Needless to say they were not happy I sunk the carrier. I was promptly DC'd to the bottom..game over:dead:

I was in Celebes Sea doing my 1st patrol out of Manila and stumbled across the biggest task force I could possibly imagine with 4 different carriers coming down the center surrounded by so many battleships and destroyers that I couldnt count them all. It was broad daylight. I am using RFB v1.2 and the seas were so rough that I could hardly use my periscope without surfacing but that was no option in this situation. I was on the port side of the convoy at periscope depth as it approached. My sonar was pretty much one solid sound for a full 45 degrees of the approaching convoy. I ended up setting my sights on a big fleet carrier and moved in at 1/3. I only had 4 forward torpedo tubes and no aft so I knew this was gonna be rough. luckily, I was stopped in perfect position as they moved in around me. Escorts gave me no problem and went right by. When It came time to start working the numbers, I had a helluva time trying to line up the mast of the carrier because my sub was rocking all over the place and the huge waves were only giving me a split second view every so often. I tried to raise myself up a bit but I was afraid I would start sticking out so I settled at 45 depth. Anyway, I just ended up guessing on the distance after a few futile attempts at measuring the mast which was impossible in the circumstances. I got a sonar lock on the carrier and was able to track it long enough to get speed and I knew all the other ships would be going same speed. AoB was easy because of my setup. I ended up doing too much spread. My first torpedo (0 spread) went right into the bow of the carrier but the others missed. Yes, I am that bad that I can miss a carrier at 1500 yds but at least I admit it. Anway, the crazy thing is that one of those torpedos struck the cruiser on the otherside of the convoy and gave me an instant "she's going down!" which kinda struck me as funny considering I had heard it took 5-7 torpedo's to sink one those. I verified it as it was going down by external view. In the end, I had left a huge hole in the front of a fleet carrier which made the bow stay underwater but it never sank, a cruiser that sank instantly with secondaries, and I also found a different cruiser on other side of convoy that had smoke and fire pouring out the side of it but didnt have any hull damage. So I wounded a fleet carrier, sunk a cruiser, and wounded a cruiser using 4 torpedos of which 3 missed their intended target.

At the time, I didnt know that your torpedo's dont reload in silent running mode so I thought the game was bugging and gave up the hunt and exited game.

I couldnt get all the boats into one screenshot because there were too many and I wanted to focus on the 4 carriers in the pic in the front. There were several destroyers off of each side out of the screenshot, and I counted 6 ships that had already passed and were up ahead. My sub was a little bit ahead of this shot so you can see where I was positioned for the fleet carrier coming up in center row. I had to keep moving back until I could get all the carriers into the shot. I took this screenie just before I proceeded with my attack. I counted 19 ships total including 4 carriers. I think I must have chainsmoked a half a pack of cigs in 20 minutes. Too much stress for me.

Oh man, that's a beautiful site! (salivating rubbing hands) all those ships...
That's my luck, to run across something like that and have 3 torps. :D
All my patrols and I've yet to come across anything like that, a battle group that is. I'm always too far from the passing task forces, or it's daytime and my batteries are too depleted to get in position. :arrgh!:
