Hamachi for big online SH4 battles

I just wanted to tell you all about this program Hamachi. Its free and you can get it at http://www.hamachi.cc/

What it does is simplify the creation of a VPN, and allows you to play SH4, or any game for that matter over LAN, instead of the internet. I'm not doing a great job of explaining it, but I've used it before.

So if ubi is down again, or you're having problems with it, try this, there's a tutorial and stuff on their site:up:

If you install it, be sure to check the setting to disallow file sharing and you are ready to go. Join server Subsim SH4, password: dan

Steps to set up a Himachi LAN game with SH4:

Download Hamachi, apparently it's free for people to use on 16 person networks (plenty for us).

Install Hamachi, turn off the file sharing option.

Now, start Himachi. Very simple app, remember to use left and right mouse clicks to see options to chat, join, etc.

Next, join the network Subsim SH4 with password: dan

Or start your own and advertise here.

Now, when you are connected to the network, you can chat with the other guys in it.

Start SH4, go to MP, LAN, and the game should be there.

I had just adjusted my heading to lead the convoy when I caught a DD crossing my bow at a perfect 90 degree angle, hauling ass for you. I lined up and let him have a spread of two and he went kablewee!

Yeh, Hamachi is a great little proggy. Been using it with friends quite some time now. :up:

Edit: As the Subsim SH4 seems to be full pretty much all the time, I made another one called Subsim SH4 2, the password is the same; 'dan'.

neal i discovered that hamachi can be a huge problem regarding online play and the use of cd keys, when ubi server is back up i recommened taking hamachi off subsim, because it is a major security bypass.. :up:

Yeh, that´s "dark side" of Hamachi, some games dont need CD-key in LAN games. But all in all, I find it easier to connect via Hamachi when playing with friends.

B. If the game will play on Hamachi, there's really no point in hiding the fact. The key necessary for play on UBI should also do a check and allow games anywhere.

(you could make a Internet game using the UBI browser then stating the hamachi info in that game once someone joins...but then someone could spread it around....

We had this issue in my old guild for other games that used Hamachi.

We made it a requiste to become a "Trusted Board Member" before you could get access to a sublevel of the forums that held all of the passwords to the Hamachi Channels.

In other words, be around long enough, or prove that you're dedicated to your craft as a submarine captain - by way of testing in head to head mode on an unsecured Hamachi Channel for a maximum of fifteen minutes in either Coop or Adversarial.

This is my recommendation. The problem is finding people willing to take on five or six people at once for the Trusted Board Member status for a session at a time.

Howy, I installed Himachi but it messed up my ability to conect to IL-2 1946 Trhu Hyper Lobby.

So I uninstalled it, is there a trick to getting it to allow me to connect my other games with out messing them up ?

Oh shush. Don't play the morality card as that should really be up to the players themselves whether or not to use Hamachi. What do you care if someone bought it or not? Does it make you feel righteous knowing you've spoiled a pirate's day? You may just have spoiled the pleasure of 10 legitimate buyers in the process. Do you think your actions judging Hamachi will compel people to buy? The only ones with a genuine interest is Ubi, as they're delivering a product and the support they like to extend to people who enjoy their products doesn't come free.

Hamachi to me is a great alternate way to set-up online games with few people. It takes the hassle out of some games' woeful inadequate matchmaking services saving time spent configuring ports, passing IP's and waiting on master servers and making the gaming experience more fluid. If that's the case, hey, Ubisoft may just make another $50 bucks of a pirate. In fact, spending some time in this community and my less than legal copy made me decide to buy the limited collectors edition. I genuinely think Ubi Romania deserves my money, and I'll happily extend the game's lifetime by modding it. For free.

There's black and white and a whole big gray area in between. How you tread that area and the decisions you make in it you is what makes your character.

If this does go to an option of sending money there needs to be a post saying that this is going to happen, and here is where to send the check.
A good Idea would be someone in Europe, and someone in The United States to collect these funds to get this project off the ground.

Hi, New Member here, hope to contribute something at least.

I just wanted to bring up that I pay for a 25 man Ventrilo server everymonth that maybe at most 10 slots are taken up by some friends of mine who play World of Warcraft. Mostly the server is used for local and long distance friends to get together and play games. I would be more than happy to set up a couple of Silent Hunter Channels for people to use while they are in game as Voice communication makes everything easier and more enjoyable.

Well folks I must add that my experience with Hamachi was simply Fantastic. Truly unbelievable from my perspective :up: The sim ran so seemless and smooth I could swear on Davey Jones' heart that I was playing single player mode. Playing on the UBI server whenever it allowed me to connect from time to time was never like this. There were times of frame rate fluctuations and slight pauses throughout the battles but still managed to play the games quite well on the UBI server dispite the "waiting" connection problems :damn: I'm now going to engage with both servers to feed my tonnage appitite and playing with so many GOOD people online that have this "SubSim" bug. Don't get me wrong but the game it self has some bugs, major and otherwise. It still crashes the odd time for me wither it be online or single mission on patrol, esp when I fire #1 torp but I stick with this game no matter what. The positives outway the negatives.
My big many many Thanks goes to all you creaters out there who take the time and Greatly Improve this sim in all of its respects, from the sound mods,the Realisim enhancements,Fabulous skins,tweak files ect. ect. (can someone Please make a better, slightly thicker smoke and torp impact splash)... had to squeeze that in ;)
Lastly I will just say Never Give Up Never Surrender.
I hope the future patch fixes this problem.
Oh Yeah....Give Hamachi a try and I truly hope the results are as great as mine were.

This is completely preposterous. Hamachi was born out of the necessity to allow people without public ip address to host games, or even to allow them to join servers outside their network. I suppose you know that microsoft direct play multiplayer games don't work either way if one or more players are behind a NAT.
And not all NAT's can be disabled becasue some of them are being used at the ISP level.
So really you should get your technical facts strait before pointing fingers. :roll: :roll: :roll:

I think it is silly to worry so much about pirates, when you, me, and probably 90 % of everyone else here payed for the game. Why punish ourselves? Don't make other people's wrongdoing force you to conform your behavior.

As a practical sidenote, if one did want to make sure people using subsim's Hamachi networks had a legit copy, why not have the players meet an admin or whoever on ubi's network sometime, as proof. Then, in the future, give them access to the hamachi network. Problem solved.

But seriously, if hamachi really was created by pirates for the reasons you claimed, would subsimmers really be able to cause harm by using it? After all, the pirates supposedly already know about it. At this point, almost all computer gamers are aware of the program. The cat is out of the bag and has been for a long while.

one thing Im still curious about is how significantly would the mod config difference between each player be a factor in mismatching an online game. I am new to sumsim but not to using hamachi. if you want to have loads of people in a game All you need to do is make a bunch of free rooms on the host account and then when one is full start joining the next. we had to do this for a mmorp called moparscape and it worked fine

be it 1.4 Or 1.5,
all files must match for Multiplay.

The 'users per network limitation' is very annoying.
The fact that a network needs administration just SUX.
I had this problem before, and now i use n2n.

n2n is a layer2 p2p-vpn tool like hamachi. the downside of this tool is that it works with static ip's ( unless you setup a dhcp server 24/7)
n2n is very minimalistic, without bells & whistles like hamachi, and it works everytime.

I have setup a supernode on my linux-server at the datacenter, and hooked up a dhcp-server in my network.
This means that everybody can join the network without any configuration.

Every user gets a class c ipadress, and can join/leave whenever you like without 'full networks'
However, per network i can issue 254 ipadresses which means there can be a maximum of 254 concurrent users.

A viable alternative to Hamachi is Tunngle. We have had good sucess playing via LAN/ Tunngle
