View Full Version : Is Periscope Depth Modelled Correctly?

In any other sub-sim I've played, at periscope depth you could stick the periscope up quite high out of the water for a good look around, or just skim the surface if bad guys were nearby...

With SHIV it seems that periscope depth has the scope very close to the surface... In fact I find the observation scope gets hit by waves so much (even in relatively calm seas) that it is effectively useless.

Sometimes I order a manual depth decrease to get my scope up higher... I was wondering what "persicope depth" meant historically. Would it be the maximum depth that just allows the tip to break the surface as in the game, or a depth that allows the skipper to choose a higher scope view? Did skippers actually say "periscope depth" IRL, or did they order a specified depth depending on how they intended to use the 'scope?
