Renown, medals, and a new boat

HI,

I have a basic question about the renown system. I currently am in the thrid patrol of a career in GWX in November 1940. I am driving U-122 an IXB boat. In the back of my mind I am thinking that sometime in 1941 I'd like to get an IXC for the increased range. I understand that will cost several thousand renown points.

IIRC the promotion and medal system also runs on renown. So my question is, "will spending most of my renown on a new boat slow down promotions and the awarding of medals?"

Another question, When I change boats will my crew come with me or will I have to start off with newbs again??

#1. No Renoun is for Subs and equipement. Does not affect Promotions or Medals as far as I know.

#2. Yes they come with you. That's if you do not have transfers checked in SHIII Cmdr, they will stay with you all thru your career. If you don't use SHIII Cmdr they will stay with you too.

One thing renown will effect is your rank, if you fall below a certain amount, you can be demoted to a lower rank. Promotions are based on the amount of renown you have in your bank.

hmm how come i got the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds
after the first patrol, all i scored was somewhere around 150 renown

The medals system in SH3 is a bit odd and full of bugs. Still it is hardcored (I think) so we have to live with it

But here's what I based my reply on.....

On my first patrol in GWX I bagged The HMS Rodney, 3 Flower Corvettes and a Large Merchant. Total Renoun for that patrol was 1558.90 giving me a total of 2358.90. I started out with only 800 after getting the officers and crew I wanted from the 1500 original Renoun. I then docked with the Bessel at Vigo Spain for resupply and found when I restarted I was promoted from Lt. Jr to Lt. Sr. A far cry from accululating 5000 in Renoun. So if there's a bug, it seems renoun has no bearing on promotions. I've even seen the same in Vanilla SHIII as I received the Knights Cross with Diamonds and Swords on my 7th patrol. That's the reason I said what I did above.

i only scored around 150 renown because i bagged alot of neutrals in my patrol
(i dont really care if they are neutral or enemy, they are going down. and in some cases if i spot a german sloop i ram it)

Do you use GWX? If so you're promoted to Lt. Sr. as soon as you've got 1499 of renown. So if you pass the naval academy you should be promoted right away, even if you do not sink a single ship.:up:

No problem! If you don't want to do the academy but grab those 1000 points then just go to C:\Documents and Settings\<yourusername>\My Documents\SH3\data\cfg, and find the NavalAcademy.log file.
There you just have to change the settings like this:

I don't think you get 1500 of renown for passing the academy but rather 1000. So if you pass the academy you've got the 500 starting renown + the 1000 academy renown.

Yep I know what you mean, and I do agree with you. The renown system is a bit strange if you ask me. In any case you do get some renown from the naval accademy (as stated in previous posts) and you have 500 in the bank as you're starting the game. Also don't forget that SH3Cmd is also affecting the promotions. For example I was Lieutenant (Junior Grade) which is Oberleutnant z. S in the german ranking system. To reach this grade you need 15000 renown. I had 16000 and I got promoted. Afterwards I used my renown and I was left with 6000. I did a mission where I sunk 40000 GWT and I got promoted again!!!!! I shouldn't because the next promotion comes at 25000 renown (that obviously I don't have). The fun though starts now with SH3Cmd. In my personel file I am Kapitänleutnant (as I got promoted) but SH3Cmd sees me as Oberleutnant z. S. In other words go figure:hmm:

I've got over 30,000 renown and I am still a kapitanleutnant.
