I wonder if there will be a band playing at the pier like in SHIII. After a hard patrol it´s always nice to get a warm welcome back at home. I´d like to gradually hear "Anchors Aweigh" as I enter harbor!!

Was there a band? I do not recall if there where bands with exception of the launching of a new vessel and they played Anchor Away. I understand there was people at the docks but no bands. I could be wrong.:hmm:

I believe U.S. subs never had a band to play for them when they arrived home from patrol. There movements were kept secret at all times. Only navy personal would greet them when they got home, with no bands in sight!:shifty:

That is what I thought also. Sure, they would come in with a broom on the conning tower for a clean sweep and the other navy peeps would see it. Other than that, no fanfare.

Broom, crew on deck, people at the dock waving and so on would all be good.

Speaking of anchors (when away from port to prevent drifting) and moorings (to keep docked ships from drifting) - me wants;).

In Run Silent, Run Deep a band is playing "Anchors Aweigh" as they leave port. Not a lot of people at dockside to see them off, though.

It might be nice when leaving/entering Pearl, or even one of the Aussie ports, but I would hope not to see it at Cavite or Surabaja. Too small and backwater for that kind of thing.

@Steve,

Was that not just Hollywood being Hollywood with the band?

Yes, I hope it's not to late to do this, but maybe just if
you have had a succesful patrol.

Put a newspaper cameraman on the dock to record it too ...
make it look like the old news reels ...

I wish they would reconsider the ending too ... to be Tokyo Bay
for victory celibration like in Nascar winners circle with the
Battleship Missouri and a fly by of fighter planes.

and a real Japanese courier comes to your door with a bottle
of your favorite beverage (I like Dr. Pepper) and says,

"Oh so sori you win big Joe" "We never do that again".

Yeah, baby! ... that's what I call an ending ... :yep: :yep: :yep:

I'd love to be able to park my boat in Tokyo Bay for the surrender ceremony. There were several subs there in fact, I looked up the actual number for my "Pearl Harbor" post on here but am too sick...okay too lazy more than just sick, to look it up at the moment.

One of the coolest random things I ever had happen to me was noticing the distincly WWII era Navy tattoo on the arm of an old gentleman at a bar while waiting for my friends to show up. I bought him a beer and thanked him for my service, he was a little surprised and said kids didn't do much of that anymore...I was surprised at nearly 30 at the time I was still a kid. But the very cool part was for the price of that one bottle of beer to a guy whom I just happened to notice a tattoo on I got to hear a long story about the surrender ceremony, see he was a Gunner's Mate on the Missouri and was there on The Day and got to watch from the cheap seats as the Japanese surrendered, since he was pre-war Navy and lost buddies at Pearl (where he was assigned to the West Virginia at the time) he said that was the best moment of his life.

Yeah that was off track some, but yeah I really want to see that surrender happening from the tower of my boat if possible.

As for the band, I'm with Sailor Steve, for Pearl it would be very cool to have, for Cavite and the like I doubt they'd go through the trouble since they were small bases with better things to do than organize band reviews.

NO! NO! Don't you know ANYTHING?!

Actually you could very well be right. But then, couldn't the same be said for Das Boot? Honestly, I have no idea. No bands ever played for us in a port, but when a carrier was refueling on one side of an oiler and our destroyer on the other side, the carrier had a full brass band out on the elevator.

I have that information for you Schatten, sorry your sick ... Hope you get better soon.

Are you ready for this ... Fifty-two (52) boats were lost and the same number fifty-two (52) boats were in Tokyo Bay for the surrender.

List of submarines lost in WW II ... God rest their souls
