At the main menu of SHIII when you first start up the game, where you have the choice of career, single mission, etc., there is an option for multiplayer.

When you select that, you then get two choices: LAN or internet (I forget exactly how the internet choice is phrased). In order to play online with others, you'll need to have an account registered with Ubisoft.

You do have to register at UBI. Once you have done that, you will log in, under the MP section of the game, and then you will see the lobby with all the games that people are hosting. When they show up there, they haven't started the game yet and you can join. You will see a version that the host is using. Make sure you join a server that is using the same patched version you have or you will crash to desktop upon start of the game.
Also, if you do not see a ping of the host server you will not be able to join it. he hasn't opened his ports up or has his firewall enabled with no exceptions.
One important thing in MP is that you have the same the same version of the game you are playing. For example, SH3 vailla, make sure you don't have other mods enabled or you will, more than likely, CTD when the game starts.
If you play with a certain mod in MP you and the host have to have the exact same files, or again, CTD
What I do is this to help ensure a good MP experience. I have a stock SH3 game file patched to 1.4. then for every mod I have I copy the stock SH3 to a new folder, rename it to the name of the mod then install the mod to that folder I just created, and make a shortcut on my desktop. This way I can play any version I want in MP with no problems with CTD.
I hope some of this helps you out. There are a bunch of us who have been Beta testing GWX and all I can say is the MP aspect is great. Is more stable than the GW1.1a version. If you are looking for a MP game, look me up on MSN and I can host a game for us to play. I have Vanilla, GW1.1a and GWX beta that I play online. The GWX mod will be out soon and I would suggest getting it. It adds a great new deal of stuff and makes MP action even better....

Just remember, if you're hosting a game, or going to join one, you and everyone else must have the exact same setup. The game will crash otherwise. So if you're running GWX, then everyone else has to as well.

Use a "forums" UBI account, rather than trying to register through the game (which often doesn't work). It is also possible to play "LAN" games, using Hamachi to do it across the 'net.

Depending on your firewall/router configurations you may need to sort out packet forwarding to host games (not needed just to play).

Finally, there are various "clans" on the net that specialise in multi-player games (the one I am in is www.34thflotilla.com ). There is a list of all such clans on the community manual, along with help about getting set up. The relevant links are:

http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Multiplayer

and

http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Links_%26_Resources#Team_and_Leagu e_Sites

If you have any questions, just ask here. The users of this forum are very helpful, IMHO.

Excellent instructions!

Just want to point out one thing. If you're using a router you won't have any problems connecting to play on another's hosted server game. However, if you want to host a game yourself, you'll need to set your pc/router up to permit doing that. If you don't, you wind up with a zero ping and no one will be able to connect to your game.

You need to port forward your router specific to SHIII. An easy and excellent way to do so is to go to http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm. First you'll see a comprehensive listing of routers. Select and click on yours. Then scroll down to the bottom and select and click Silent Hunter III. Yep, that's right: Port Forward already has the game requirements for SHIII. Just follow the instructions to set up your router for port forwarding and you'll be able to host your own online multiplayer games!

Are you trying to set up a account on ubi via SH3?
If so it wont work i dont know why but the only way is to get out of the game and set one up by going to www.ubi.com (http://www.ubi.com) then going back to game and puting the username and password in the loging in screen that you used at ubi.
Hope this helps.
I will get you playing on MP SH3 soon trust me.

Can I assume this includes any edits to the .cfg files? Last time I went online, I started my own mission, no-one joined but none of my edits were effective. Howver, the game played just fine.

Yes mate you all need the same files for the game to run. other wise you will all ctd. It is best to make a dual install one for MP the other for your career game mo the hell out of the career install as much as you like but leave the Mp install nice and clean.
I have 2 installs
career install
SH3, SH3 Commander 2.7, 1.4 patch and GWX.
MP install
SH3, 1.4 patch and GWX.

The files in the gramaphone folder are not important (I've over 200 in mine so I can't see how anyone else could have the exact same collection) :hmm:
