Why reply? I already know all of what the quote says, and some besides. Even if I didn't, it's obviously a teaser and more will come. I have patience. In fact when I was first married my wife would ask me if I minded if she shook her Christmas presents. I said "Sure, go ahead". She asked me if I wanted to shake mine. I always said no.

Like the GWX threads keep saying, it'll be here when it's here...whatever it is.

Gentlemen, you know your stuff :yep:

Allow me to leave you with another teaser :

"One of the benefits of an interest in WWII is the ability to speak, meet, and/or correspond with people who participated in the events and shaped them, each in his own small way, into what we read about today. One of the men I had the pleasure of meeting on many occasions was Admiral Erich Topp."

Onkel Neal
11-02-06, 01:24 PM
and.....

"No discussion of submarine silencing would be complete without reference to the parallel development of the powerful BQQ-2 sonar system consisting of a low-frequency passive array(BQR-7) and a bow-mounted, 15-foot-diameter passive-active spherical array(BQS-6). The prototype of this system was installed in the USS TULLIBEE (SSN 597), the first nuclear submarine specifically designed to be the quietest submarine that could be built within the state of the art at that time(1958-1960). The idea first tried on TULLIBEE was to make the bow region as quiet as possible by moving the noisy bow planes to the sail and the torpedo tubes to a midships location below the control room."

Location of death: Hanover, Germany (http://www.nndb.com/geo/352/000101049/)

Vale to a brave warrior!

Certainly must have been fascinating to meet people who had survived the war after being involved in significant combat. Those such as Adm Topp and 'Silent Otto' could have provided a wealth of information.

I always found it poignant to see Adm Topp talking of those times and people who no doubt perished. He seemed comfortable doing so, no doubt having made peace with the past to whatever extent he could (not at all suggesting he had anything of which to be ashamed, more that it must have been hard to think of friends and colleagues who died, and reflecting on the many lives his own actions must have cost through sinking ships).

Coming this January 2007 Subsim will have been on the web 10 years. Since 1997 Subsim has gone from a small home page to a worldwide community recognized by game developers and mainstream media. To celebrate the community of submarine enthusiasts, game developers, and veterans, we are having a Subsim book published.

From your computer to your bookshelf—

the 2007 Subsim Almanac
http://www.subsim.com/images2/almana1.jpg

The Subsim Almanac will have articles and stories from a good cross section of game players, game developers, historians, novelists, Navy men, specialists, and notable artists. Over 350 pages of material to commemorate all things naval. This book will be available through Subsim and Amazon.com in December 2006.

The Subsim Almanac will feature:

The Flanders U-Boat Flotilla 1915 - 1918 - Deryck Swetnam MA, historian, UK
"UB6’s first patrol had an unexpected consequence. On 1 May UB6 sank the destroyer Recruit in a torpedo attackoff the Galloper Light Vesseland withdrew. The Admiralty made deployments to intercept UB6. Four trawlers on patrol off the Hinder were alerted and four destroyers were sent from Harwich to support them. The trawlers were attacked by the torpedo boats A2 and A6 from Zeebrugge. Columbia was sunk by torpedo; Barbados and Chirsit were damaged by gunfire."

Silent Hunter III Captain's Log - Florin Boitor, SH3 Exec. Producer, Romania
"SH3 was supposed to be released in September and we were late. Very, very late! There was a lot of tension inside the dev team. Sometimes it’s easier to get a million dollars rather than a single month delay. But the unthinkable happened. At the end of June we were informed that the game release would be postponed to Q1 2005 and it should include a dynamic campaign. It was truly a great decision and this kind of decision is instrumental in making a great game. Usually when this kind of announcement is made (the game release date is pushed back), the communities are very unhappy. But, the Silent Hunter community is really one of a kind and they were cheering. Last year I had the opportunity to meet some of them at the Subsim 2005 meeting in Holland and I understood better why their reaction was so positive all the time. I guess, in fact, the community is not based only on the game itself. The game is only one of the vectors that gather them."

Restoration of the USS Cod - Paul Farace, curator of memorial sub Cod, USA,
"Salvation for COD came one day during a visit to the Washington Navy Yard to pick up various artifacts for COD. During a brief chat with Navy Curator Henry Vadnais, Jr, in his office, I asked him if it would be possible to get the 5-in. wet mount on display next door in the Navy Museum. It was a question I had asked him every time I visited him. But this time after telling me the Navy Museum would never part with their prized gun, he added that he had located one for COD. I remember asking quite seriously if he was kidding me. Several months later, just in time for a crew reunion, we installed the seven-ton gun on its mount on COD’s main deck. Today, that gun fires salutes to visiting ships and commemorates important events with a very loud bang!"

Back to the Future: Submarines in Need of a New Mission - Bill Nichols, analyst, former USS Nautilus crewman, USA
"In December 1947 Admiral Nimitz made a formal recommendation to the Secretary of the Navy to begin development of a nuclear submarine. In his letter, Nimitz noted that nuclear submarines would give the Navy a secure means of conducting offensive strategic missile operations. In August 1948 BuShips established a Nuclear Power Branch, headed by Captain Hyman G. Rickover. Rickover soon put the Electric Boat Company in Groton, Connecticut on contract to design the world’s first nuclear submarine, USS Nautilus (SSN 571). Construction began on June 14, 1952 with a formal keel-laying by President Truman. USS Nautilus was commissioned in September 1954 and began sea trials on January 17, 1955 with the historic message, Underway on Nuclear Power. "

The Dreadnought Era - David Millichope, historian, photographer, UK
"In February 1906 a new player entered the world of naval politics; HMS Dreadnought. She was to define the naval era for a period of no more than thirty years. Her brief stay occurred during a global power struggle that stretched from the beginning of Britain’s relative decline as the world’s first superpower, circa 1870 (the emergence of other major industrialized nations) until 1989 (the collapse of the Soviet Union and emergence of America as the world’s only superpower). This struggle polarizes around the eruption of two massive military conflicts we now refer to as the First and Second World Wars. HMS Dreadnought was so significant she lent her name to a whole generation of capital ships that held centre stage in naval strategy and thinking. By the time of the second major conflict (1939-45) her day had all but gone, her pre-eminence replaced by aircraft carriers."

In Memoriam: Erich Topp (U-552) - Theodore P. Savas, owner, president of Savas Publishing and Consulting Group, USA
"I had the pleasure of meeting Topp when he was visiting the States in January 1996. The genesis of that meeting was rather unusual. I had just finished reading Eric Rust’s wonderful book Naval Officers Under Hitler: The Story of Crew 34 (Praeger, 1991). One of the footnotes mentioned a recent letter and interview with Topp conducted by Rust. I am still not sure what prompted my decision, but I picked up the phone and called Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Dr. Rust was friendly and helpful. "I just spoke with Topp," he told me. "He happens to be here in Texas visiting his daughter. I don’t think he would mind if you called him. Would you like the number?"I thanked him and hung up. My wife was shocked. "You are going to call a German submarine commander on the phone and chat?" Indeed, I could never have envisioned the journey I was about to begin."

Tesseraction Games and Enigma: Rising Tide - Kelly Asay, Deep Six Producer, USA
"As an independent developer, you have a couple of paths you can take. Contract work for somebody else, create a pitch for a product and shop till you find a publisher; or do what we did: raise some capital on our own, put in a couple years of nearly free work and create your own product. On this path there are also choices to make, particularly the choice of what level at which to compete. Since ones reach should (in nearly all circumstances) exceed ones grasp, we set our sites high: we would make an "A" level product utilizing as much high-end middleware as we could, it would be a massively multiplayer game, and we would release it electronically via online partnerships.
It didn’t quite work out that way."

The Lucky Lighter - Jason Lobo, writer, USA
Man overboard! Mueller screamed out. Everyone turned to look, where Kohler had been standing, but it was too late. Gunther Kohler was gone and there would be no finding him in this storm at night.
Adrenaline surged through Grunni as he flailed wildly in the water. He waved and yelled to get his to get his comrades’ attention, but the U-boat melted into the stormy darkness There he was, alone, bobbing up and down the North Atlantic, waiting for death. He found himself surprisingly calm. He knew about hypothermia and its lethal effects, so he waited to drift into unconsciousness and oblivion. He rolled over on his back and stared at the shrouded heavens.

Submarine Silencer - Donald Ross, PhD, Scientist, USA
"During both World War I and II, the primary mission for submarines had been to attack and sink surface ships. Following WWII, our only potential enemy was the Soviet Union, which had only a few ocean-going ships. With no significant anti-surface-ship mission for US submarines, our need for a submarine force was being questioned. But the Soviets had a huge submarine fleet. To counter this threat we would need quiet submarines designed specifically for the anti-submarine role. In 1949, at the instigation of the submariners themselves, CNO directed that each fleet assign one division of four submarines "to the sole task of solving the problem of using submarines to detect and destroy enemy submarines." Submarines now had an important mission. Submariners could give a collective sigh of relief. A new category called SSKs (K for Killer) was soon designated."

Back in the Day – Life aboard a U.S. Nuclear Submarine - Tim Grab, US Navy, USA
"Request permission to come aboard."
It was a sunny spring day in May of 1993 when I reported aboard the Improved Los Angeles class submarine USS Annapolis, SSN-760, at the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Connecticut. She was at EB for her PSA, or Post-Shakedown Availability. This is a shipyard period in which a new submarine, after her commissioning, launch, and first year of operations with the fleet, receives all of the upgrades and equipment that were not part of its original construction contract. For a nub, the first few days after reporting aboard can be a bit overwhelming. He must become familiar with the layout of the ship, meet the 120-ish crewmembers (and at least try to remember some of their names), and gain a minimal familiarity with the locations of basic accommodations.
The only thing I really dreaded about reporting to the boat was: To crank or not to crank. "

Chief Mac and the Contact - Dave Stoops, US Navy
At the proper time, Mac yelled out, Up Periscope! and the quartermaster promptly threw the valves to bring the scope up. As it rose, Mac grabbed the handles smartly, wrapped his arms around the scope in true John Wayne fashion, and began his 360 rotation to look for other ships in the area. He did not get very far before he yelled, “Gotta contact! Mark this bearing! “ Of course, at this time, the whole control room came alive. We finally got a contact after weeks of inactivity. I had been sitting at the fire control panel, but got up and walked over to the plotting table, opened up the contact log book, made sure all the equipment was up and running and the input to the bearing indicator was selected to the scope. Mac continued to report his find, “Surface ship! Riga class warship! Estimated range....5000 yards! Estimated speed 10 knots!”

Blood & Honor - Gerard Cuomo
Fritz spins his cover to the rear and presses into the periscope sight. I advise him of my choice for identification. He checks my decision against what he is seeing and responds.
"Ja, Victory Ship...seven thousand tons."
I am about to take the scope back when he shouts.
"New contact sir...bearing three-three-zero...six-thousand meters."
I shove him out of the way and question what my eyes are seeing, a second merchant contact, much smaller, about seven or eight hundred meters astern of the Victory. It must have been hidden from sight during the zig-zag. This is the moment. I feel like the spear hunter, arm cocked back ready to throw. Breath held. Heart pounding faster and faster. Here it comes.

Sub Club Inter-Continental Meetings - Sharkstooth
The last surprise Neal sprang on the group at the 2004 Subsim Meeting was an exclusive, hands-on preview of Silent Hunter III. The game was still in development but Florin Boitor, the executive producer, sent Neal a beta copy to demo for the group. The game was great, even at that stage we knew it would be a smash hit. We were the first subsimmers to sink ships with SH3!

Yes, certainly, thanks! US bank checks are fine. Non-US check cost me $5 to process, but American Express traveler's checks and US money orders work fine, too. Shipping to Israel is same as Europe. Shipping by air (fast) to Israel is $12.80, but surface should get it there in a couple weeks.

That's the submit to the publisher house date. The proofreader firm has not completed all the edits, but I anticipate they will by Friday. Then the publication will begin. The mail out date will be ~Jan 26, the date of Subsim's 10th anniversary.

Amazon: mid-to-late January.

Neal,

I'm thoroughly enjoying my copy of the book, Bravo Zulu! I have some family and friends wanting to buy it, and I'd like to purchase a few more copies myself. I've looked all over Amazon, and it just doesn't seem to be there. Is it up yet, or are they screwing something up?

Onkel Neal
02-07-07, 11:32 AM
Thanks, glad you like it. You must be one of the first to get it! I know Kpt. Lehman, Avon Lady, and Torplexed have received their copies, as well, and by the end of the week, all pre-ordered copies will be on their way (nearly 300!).

Amazon: No screwup, just one tired ol' editor who can’t parse out the time to get the ISBN completed so I can set up distribution with Amazon and B&N. The last few weeks had me flying to San Francisco to demo SH4 and meet the dev team, write the preview, complete our monthly accounting close at my job, and spent the weekened with my kids/Super Bowl. Last night I had dinner with Joe Buff and Michael DiMercurio, that was fabulous; naturally, I am writing a pice on that. My plan is to complete the ISBN application this weekend, but I understand the process involved to get the book listed on Amazon will still take 6 weeks In the mean time, I will send you a link to the printer so your friends and family can order the book just as they would through Amazon.

FYI: after the initial run of the 2007 Subsim Almanac is sold, future copies will bear the title 2007 Submarine Alamanc. Same contents but my marketing mentor urged the broader title so people who come across the book on Amazon and B&N will understand immediately what the book is about. Outside of this community, people generally raise an eyebrow and say, "Sub sim? What's that?" So, for you folks who ordered early, you get the First Edition. When you're old and needing quick cash, you can sell it on eBay and finance your mamba lessons :smug:

Neal,

I haven't read the book and I understand the reasoning for changing the title, but isn't the book more about Subsim itself? Do you think removing Subsim completely out of the title would be a bit misleading? Why not something like '2007 Subsim Submarine Almanac'? or something like that. That's my suggestion anyways. :yep:

Onkel Neal
02-07-07, 12:47 PM
hi Fred,

no, the title SUBMARINE Almanac is actually more accurate, the book is not about Subsim, it is about submarines, submariners, submarine fiction, naval history, & submarine games. :yep: The only really Subsim-specific content are the Subsim Roll Call bits, which make up about 7 pages, and the Subsim toons. The book is produced by Subsim, and the cover will still have the SUBSIM.COM logo.

Hi Steed,

The original plan was to get the ISBN right away, but that has changed. Frankly, selling the book directly through Subsim is 50% more profitable, because retailers like Amazon take 45% right off the cover price. And now I am in talks with a bigger publisher who may buy the publishing rights to the book and if that happens, they will handle the ISBN, distribution and fullfillment (which would be less costly and thereby help keep our royalty at a decent level). More on that later, but for now, send me a PM with your name & address and I'll ship a copy to you. You can pay me next time we have a London Subsim meeting.

Neal

Neal, you have blown me away. I am very, very grateful for this nice gesture.

Many Thanks to you Neal.

Surface mail to Europe can take between 3~6 weeks. Usually around 3~4 weeks, by my experience.

All I can say is, "Wow!" You really put together a great book Neal. I hadn't really paid much attention tot he details since I knew I wanted to buy a copy as soon as I heard about the book. I have been expecting some sort of spiral bound book of fifty or so pages to arrive in the mail. However, i was stunned today when I tored open the box to reveal a beautiful paperback of 364 pages! Well done my man!

Neal, you must be one of the very few, if there are any others, who would not only put so much dedication into running a website but also remembering to appreciate their members as part of one giant family. Thanks for taking the time out of your life, and the lives of your family members, to put together such a wonderful almanac for all of us. We're lucky to have you!

p.s. Until I checked the mail today I had been dreading serving jury duty and possibility of having to spend a whole day just sitting around if I don't get picked. Now I'm really hoping for that same excuse to sit around and read my new almanac all day!

The only complaint that I have is that Neal didn't hand deliver it to my house.

Instead I got an ornery mailman complaining about -20'C weather.

Paypal is the #1 online transaction system, as long as you have a valid credit card, or bank account, you can sign up for an account and do business. If you prefer, you can send a US Money order or American Express traveler's check from you local bank. If you use local currency or money orders, it costs me an extra $12 to process it.

You can also wrap US cash in a couple sheets of paper mail it.

thanks!
Neal

Hi Nemo, if you ordered shipping by surface, it can take 6-8 weeks. Hopefully Downly did not torpedo the mail ship again. E-mail me with your name and I will check the list to make sure I did not screw up and lose your order,

Yeah, surface mail is damn slow. I should not have made that an option, I should make it airmail only to Europe. A little more expensive but you'll get it in 6 days, not 6 weeks.

The seaway is the only way things should be transported by! Real men also only travel by sea. Airway is reserved for women and cosmetics.:D

I loved the story about Enigma: Rising Tide. I was pretty bummed out when multiplayer never came. That could have been one hell of a fun time. I also loved the alternate reality story in it. It felt so convincing.

I was pretty surprised to see the hardships that came down on the devs. After reading that part, I am glad I bought the game just to help support those guys.
