Hello, excuse me if this has been discussed before; if so I missed it.

Using Firefox (v1.0.6) to read Subsim forums, I'm having word-wrap problems. With certain topics, I cannot see the entire text on the monitor, and constantly have to use the right-arrow/left-arrow key to read entire sentences.

It's okay if there's only a few posts, but gets rough with multiple pages.

Losing word-wrap only seems to happen when 1024x768 images (from photobucket, rapidshare, etc.) are displayed in posts.

Even if only 1 image is posted, in a page full of text-posts, then word-wrap fails for that entire page, and text scrolls-off the monitor. If I 'Ad-Block' the single image, the page returns to normal, word-wrap works; all text is viewable again.

To any Firefox users; is there a browser setting (or custom extension) that forces 1024x768+ images to 'fit-to-screen'?

p.s. I'm running 1024x768 resolution on a 17" monitor. The word-wrap problem also occurs with Internet Explorer.

Try "settings" from your toolbar and look for "browser options" under "web" on my home page you can reduce the size of the print... I hope that helps.

I don't use firefox but generally it seems to me that browsers are generally the same.

I'm sorry if I'm wrong.

Avg Joe, if the image size on a page exceeds your screen res, long lines of text are gonna go off the right side of the screen on every forum I've ever been to.

1 "oversize" image is all it takes, and NONE of the posts on that page will wrap properly. You'll have to scroll back 'n forth with the arrows or the drag bar.

OK, you're talking about 1024x768 images, and your res is 1024x768, but consider that there is a "border" along the left edge of the topic with the poster's avatar, location, etc. That pushes the image off the right of the screen, so you encounter the wrapping problem.

Try going up to 1280x1024 and viewing one of the "problem" topics, I bet it will wrap fine!

One forum I've been on has a rule, NO images over 800x600, to avoid that problem...

As far as a FireFox option to fit the image to the window, this might do it:

Tools/Options/Advanced/Browsing - Check "Resize large images to fit in the browser window"

I think that option is checked by default, but if it is off, turn it on and see if it helps - let me know if it worked!

This forum works far better with Opera than with Firefox, and the great news is that Opera is now completely free - no banner ads or anything.

I switched from Firefox to Opera today - just for subsim forums - and it's a lot smoother that way. In particular:

1. FF tends to focus the keyboard somewhere weird when you load up a thread, which means you have to mouse through the thread instead of using the arrow keys, Page Up/Down, etc. Same when you go back the list of threads.

2. FF renders the text of phpBB forums and navigates to anchors before it completes loading images, so the 'view new messages' feature gets screwed up, and you end up looking at posts you've already seen.

Don't get me wrong - I love Firefox, and it's still my default browser - but for phpBB forums such as this one, Opera's a better choice, IMO.

Guys,

Thank you for the information, explanations and alternatives.

I wish the Firefox setting, 'Resize large images to fit in the browser window' really worked, (it's enabled).

Upping resolution to 1280x1024 works fine, no more word-wrap problems. But my monitor refresh-rate drops down to 75-Hertz, and is too flickery (low-priced monitor...)

The bigger problem I have (other than a now 'small' 17" monitor); my vision is not the greatest. For me it's more important to able to view web sites with large, crisp text.

With a Firefox extension called, 'TextZoom v1.7', I set text-size to 150% of original (approx. 16-point font-size), which then automatically displays larger text for all websites. It's so much easier on the eyes.

I have Opera too, and it is more powerful to use with Subsim forum images, etc. The 'Fit to Window Width' option actually works :|\ , which fixes word-wrap problems when large images are posted.

Opera allows for a larger (default) page/text-size for all websites, but it also enlarges the entire web-page, including avatars, signature-pics, emoticons, sticky symbols, etc., which look pretty rough at 150% zoom (my lousy eyes! :88) ). Firefox's extension 'TextZoom' enlarges text only.

Oh well, with text enlarged to 150%, I'd guess about 1 in 10(?) posts might contain a large image. That's easy to handle with Firefox, scroll back and forth a bit, then read on. Yet for Subsim topics like, "Post your best screenshot of SHIII", Opera's the clear winner for viewing multiple pages of images.

Some day I'm going to buy a very large monitor with extremely high refresh-rates!

Using Firefox (v1.0.6) to read Subsim forums,

This has nothing to do with your question, but I suggest upgrading to 1.0.7 ASAP. 1.0.6 has a flaw with working exploit code available.

'Check for updates' option does nothing for me...
downloaded 1.0.7 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) from firefox central instead

Just a few comments.

Joe.. get the imagezoom extension for Firefox, with a single rightclick move you can resuce the large image, its a very handy ext.

The option "reduce image to fit in window in both FF and MSIE works like a charm (the way it is intented to, it only works for images shown standalonem not un forum posts or inside other html tags.

Wordwrapping is also a problem with the BBcode tags "code" and "quote" if the text parsed exceeds a certain number of chars with no linebreaks.

Most forums has rules regarding posting images, and generally the max is 800x600 or 640x480. Some forums also have an auto reduce function, Im sure there must be a phpBB mod to do the same.
If not a simple modification to the php file that does the conversion from BBcode "img" to html <img.should do the trick.
<img="" style="width: 640px; height:480px />

Opera may be free to download, but can you be sure its adfree as they claim?
Opera may be free but is it opensource so we can see if their ads are really gone?
Opera may be free, but so is Firefox and Firefox is opensource :)

Floater you bug 1:
the fix for that is easy, in prefs under adv. turn off "allow text to be selected with the keyboard" or whatever it is named in the 1.0.x series.. (using deerpark myself)

-safe surfing = happy surfing :)

Why not just use Internet Explorer? :D
