September 1939, U-48 Type VIIB, grid square AM 19.

It's currently three in the morning, I'm submerged listening to the hydrophones. I have an enormous convoy approaching me from dead ahead, still at long range. From what I can tell, I'm in excellent position.

Piece of cake, right?

Well, unfortunately, I'm in a heavy fog, overcast clouds, high seas, and I'm running real U-boat, and all I can see out of the scope is pitch friggin' black. I don't think I'd be able to spot a T3 at 50 yards in the current weather state.

According to the inital radio report, the convoy is traveling at six knots. I'm thinking of diving to 50 meters, letting the convoy pass over, then do a 180 and track 'em from astern until the weather clears up.

Anybody have any tactical advice?

I think your best bet is to let it go and get it on another patrol.

Why not track it untill the weather improves ?

I'd definately try to shadow them, while keeping a safe distance away from their escorts. And if possible, after weather improves sink the escorts first :arrgh!:

Yeah, I decided to attempt an astern track. I already have their course plotted (a couple ships managed to come within visual); I'll wait until the last few ships drop out of sight, surface and send the report in. Then it'll be sit tight and wait....... :arrgh!:

Ever get that tingly, on-the-edge-of-your-seat feeling?

It's now 5:30 AM, I'm in position ahead of the convoy after doing a night end-around. Visibility's gotten a little better. The tubes are standing by and the crew is at general quarters. The lightning is coming down hard and the thunder is making us jump every few seconds. Just waiting for that first ship to pop up over the horizon...

Man, I love this game
