One thing that bugs me is that I can see too well in the dark (must be those carrots I eat). Is there a mod that darkens everything (sky/water/etc.) for those moonless, overcast nights?

I have the opposite problem! Maybe you could turn the Brightness down on the monitor, I would turn it it up more but it's all the way :damn:

 Turning the brightness down did the trick! Sometimes, it's the simple solutions that work best!

Me too, my monitor is maxed out on brightness and i can barely see the bow spray from the bridge during night time...Think i need a new monitor.

Do either of you have Nvidia cards? If so you should be able to alter the contrast, brightness and gamma via the Nividia Display console that comes with all the most recent (over the last year or two,) drivers. You can adjust these without having to mess with the monitor at all. In fact, I had the same problem and after tweeking my settings in the Nvidia console I was able to turn the brightness on the monitor back down to 50%. Same with contrast.

I'm sure there is an ATI equavalent as well.

I have a Radeon 9200...but I will look into it Egon. Come to think of it, there is a Gamma tweak on the catalyst control panel.

Cheers :D

You guys need monitor calibration, not mods....check your blacks are black and your contrast is set properly using a grey scale..sorry, I don't have any links, but a quick search should turn up some appropriate software.

Having successfully calibrated your monitor, to get the look REALLY right, grab some of the dark water mods around (e.g. Kaa's) and you can even grab modified sky tga's (or mod them yourself). This generally involves removing the reflections in the sky tga's. There are modded ones available on these forums.

I disagree.

Playing in other games seems just right. I, too, feel night's a bit bright in SH3.

The RUb Mod contains the following adjustment:
050526: Adjusted night-time cloud colour. (data\Env\EnvColors_Arct.dat, EnvColors_Atl.dat, EnvColors_Med.dat)
I recall someone posting darker night pics on the Ubi forums back in April/May but I can't find them now.

Okay, I have my monitor and video card (gamma & brightness) set where I want it. But, the clouds 'glow' as if they're over a bright city, or lit by the moon. Any tips on fixing that?

If you dont have it already, try Ails v2 sky mod available here;
http://www.ailantd.com/SHIIIMODS/

If they still glow too much, then try downloading this version in which i've just removed the alpha layers for you with photoshop.
I must forewarn you however, it's completely un-tested so be sure to backup your originals (just in case you end up with black clouds), or use JSGME...I've conveniently packaged the folder so that it's JSGME ready. Now don't say i'm not good to you. :D

Let me know how it turns out.

The BeeryWater mod (www.beerymod.com/BeeryWater.zip) has a darker night. However, it also has much murkier water. See these screenshots which show the sky:
