I've a few questions: What do you do once you've donated? I'd like to pick my own avatar now, and am perhaps interested in changing my forum name if that's not impossible. :D

Just contact the Onkel. Or post in this thread. Be sure to tell him some details of your donation so he can verify it is indeed you who donated.

And YES, the uncle can change forum names as well.

Well, since I've posted here, I'll just wait and hope they contact me. :D

Is Onkel a username? Or am I in left field?

Just tell him how and when you made your donation, and include the avatar you want. Be sure not to make the avatar too big !

Knew of Neal by name and reputation, (who here doesn't? lol), but never heard him refered to as Onkel. Of course, I've only been here just over a month.

You've shamed me. :dead:

Thanks Drebbel for the info!

Lol, your avatar is active!

Thanks for supporting the website. If we didn not ask for a donation to make special avatars, I would have 20 people a day asking me to change them (some probably several times).

Why a donation? Why standard avatars? Well, in short because...

This forum uses a system-default ranking and avatar scheme, which means the ranks are set and avatars are bestowed according to rank. Why? It's easier, cleaner, and looks more uniform than 15,000 assorted images, some of which would undoubtedly be weird, funky, or borderline porno. And since we are a naval-themed forum...we like doing things in a military manner.

This way, the "old hands" who have been around a while will have some distinction with nobler avatars and higher ranks. The "newbies" will start out with young sailor avatars and work their way up to the more warlike, martial visages. Along the way, a user may get a "shore leave" rank or something similar, as well as having to work their way through some "unpleasant duty" ranks. Eventually, you too may be a Commander or an Ace of the Deep.

From time to time, Special Ranks are given to users who perform some extra duties, such as making really useful mods, taking an assignment such as writing a game or book review, or posting a string of exceptionally witty or interesting posts.

:Kaleun_Salute:For a small donation to the website, (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/payments.php) you can get a special rank and your own avatar.
:Kaleun_Wink:

The donation is helpful, needed, and it gives special rank some meaning: you're not just another sailor here, you're a supporter.

Thanks!

Some guys tell me they are having trouble getting logged in, they say they try to log in and the process takes them back to the main page, still not logged in. Try clearing your cookies and temp internet files and be sure to try using Internet Explorer 6.

To assist, I have run a script that should reset the subsim forums cookies that allows us to stay logged in. If you have any trouble getting/staying logged in, go to your browser's Tools, Internet Options, Delete Cookies.

Seems that many people are unware that this new forum also have a http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/haylazblue/editor/spelling.gif spellchecker.

http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/8878/spellcheck3hf.png

I never use it because a few typos here and there do not bother me :D

But some people even write their post in Word, spellcheck it, and then post it :rotfl: for those people this might be a good feature.

It is not integrated in the forum software, you need to manually download and install it. After installation it then is present in the tool bar of IE, generally - not just in the forum software.

It checks for American English by default, but in the options you can switch to British and Canadian English as well.

Make sure that Javascript/Active Scripting is enabled (Internet Options, Security Tab, click Custom Level) and that your firewall doesn´t block it. Go to this website to test Javascript:

If the lower clock shows 00:00:00 Javascript doesn´t work.

Hello,
Was wondering if the new RSS feeds have been activated? I've tried all the addresses in the FAQ, and none seem to be working. In fact, Yahoo says that there's nothing contained in the one you guys have setup specifically for it. Seems that the old RSS feed is still up and running though.

Thanks

I am too far away using a public computer to be able to click on the links but what is an rss feed?

RSS is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as blogs, news feeds or podcasts.

Users of RSS content use programs called feed 'readers' or 'aggregators': the user 'subscribes' to a feed by supplying to their reader a link to the feed; the reader can then check the user's subscribed feeds to see if any of those feeds have new content since the last time it checked, and if so, retrieve that content and present it to the user.

Some FAQ we get concerning the Brig and Keelhauling.

The Brig
A temporary suspension, from 3 to 30 days. Cause: repeated forum rule violations, or a single acute and serious rule violation. Usually this is preceded by warnings. And usually being "thrown in the Brig" does not mean we do not like you, but we have to keep some form of order, and if you cannot cooperate, you go into the Brig.

General lore: guys in the Brig frequently are assigned duty peeling potatos (imaginary). People are usually good-natured about getting sent to the Brig, but keep in mind, it's not a joke we want to make a habit of (it wastes moderator's time), and people who are sent to the Brig are actually closer to being Keelhauled (permanent BAN). So, avoid the Brig if you can (you can) and if you are thrown in the Brig, be good-natured about it and try not to let it happen again.

Keelhauled
Permanent BAN. No return to the forum is permitted, and the IP and other info on the Keelhauled individual is entered into the system to block their access to the forum. A person gets Keelhauled after several warnings (usually), usually time in the brig (temp suspension), and after some really bad violation, like opening a new account and flaming someone, or cursing out someone in PM, or repeated violations with no sign of regret or attempt to cooperate. When it reaches that point, the morderators and admin have wasted so much personal time dealing with this individual that we choose not to waste any more. He's keelhauled, thrown over the side, we do not like you and we do not want you here. By god, one would think he had been warned enough, he chose to be disruptive, and in effect, he had banned himself. He has tried very hard to get kicked off the forum.

Sometime a person is Keelhauled and people start posting Why was JoeX banned, we want him back! threads and "petitions". This is more pointless work for the moderators and neither I, Takeda, John, Bill, Gizzmoe, Warhawk, Hitman, CCIP, Seth, or any of the moderators want to spend all our free time on the Internet PMing the same people to behave, to stop flaming and trolling, to knock off the game piracy discussion, to keep the discussions clean, and in general, arguing with idiots who cannot understand that the forum has rules and guidelines. If JoeX is your buddy, why didn't you PM him and ask him to calm down or straighten up?

Subsim Moderators spend a lot of their personal time to keep the tone friendly and civil, to keep the forum free of porn, spam, software piracy, and vulgar/offensive/hate speech. People who post in forums have no idea how much time a moderator has to use in discussing why JoeX was warned, yes the warning is outlined in the rules, then keeping an eye on JoeX, who then may decide to see how close he can get to breaking the rules without actually getting in trouble. We had one member spend time in the brig for a really offensive, vulgar joke about another member; he was in the brig a few days and then turned right around and posted a borderline vulgar remark... that is unacceptable, folks, and it is selfish and thoughtless that any Subsim forum member, who wants a nice place to discuss things, would tie up a moderator's time and disrupt the tone on a regular basis. This guy may be a great guy, and we all like him, but in the end, it comes down to selfish behavior that causes grief and wastes people's time.

Subsim will also attempt to add a general idea of what got someone Keelhauled in their sig area.

In conclusion, if you have read all this way, let me say that the guidelines that each moderator is given stress patience with the members. We do not want to suspend or ban people, we do not want to play "judge" or use authority. We detest forums that have strongarmed moderators; but it is up the general forum members to do their part, too. Everyone has a bad day but with 15,000 members, that excuse doesn't extend very far. We need everyone's cooperation to keep the Subsim forums a place where mature, civil, friendly, and reasonable people can talk and help each other.

Avatars must be 60x60 in gif or jpg format, no exceptions.

When I resize the picture I want it seems smaller than what the avatars on this site are.

No, sig is fine (as long as it confirms to size and decency rules), it's the avatar that you pay to personalise rather than run the gamut of stock ones. Precise details are around here somewhere but I think the best bet is to PM Neal Stevens, the boss. Iirc it should retain a naval theme.

There is a function called "Edit Profile Picture", which changes the picture people see when they click on your name.

You can only change your avatar picture if you are a contributing member, i.e. you have donated to Subsim. See post #6 on page 1 of this thread. :sunny:

Along the way, a user may get a "shore leave" rank or something similar, as well as having to work their way through some "unpleasant duty" ranks.

What does the "Shore Leave" rank mean? Did I do something bad?
Does it mean I was not active enough? Or is it just another rank?

It means nothing. As the post you quoted states, "along the way", which means that yes, it's just another rank.
