So thinking about campaign and multiplayer mode...

Heroes & Generals (which is FPP and has almost nothing in common with simulators) has this war mode which I find great. I think some principles could be implemented into submarine game.

Game would generate convoys based on historic convoy routes and historic data regarding convoy composition (number and type of merchants and escorts), frequency of sending convoys etc.

A highest ranking player on server (the one with most tonnage for example or the one with highest successful missions throughout many earlier wars) would act as BdU. BdU sends boats to patrol areas and sometimes air reconnaisance (when available). Game would check if boats or planes spotted a convoy.

When convoy is spotted convoy battle instance is generated. Players logged on server are automatically assigned to battle. The number of slots available to players are equal to number of boats (or boats times four in case of Marulken) that are closest to the spotted convoy (in some prefixed radius). When all slots are full or time limit expires - tactical/simulation part of game starts. Result of battle is resolved in simulation mode and influences strategic assets.

The one big issue to be resolved is game clock. I think this could be based on u-boot production and function like this.

When World War II started Donitz had 57 boats. He commisioned 4 until the end of 1939 (my data is from book Naval Blockades in Peace and War, Lance E. Davis, Stanley L. Engerman). So when after first 61 (57+4) boats have been engaged in convoy battles date changes to January 1940.

In first quarter of 1940 Donitz commisioned 9 new boats. So when counter (of boats which took part in convoy battle) reaches 70 (61+9) the date changes to April 1940. And so on.

Escorts are of course better and air cover more dense later in the war.

"War" lasts until engaged-boats-counter reaches over one thousand (number of all boats sent to patrols during World War II). Then war result is resolved - either Britain "starved" when enough merchants are sunk or Germans have lost (and the loss is more grave when they lost more boats).

That's a pretty good concept. I would be really interested in a theater of operations type game style.

Meeeh... I'm dreaming about new multiplayer convoy battles similar to old good Destroyer Command versus Silent Hunter.
Of course we have Silent Hunter series to attack enemy convoys, but there is no game playing destroyer and attack sub.

Sorry, we have one: Steel Ocean, but this game is too "arkadish" and for me is not classified as naval game.
