Welcome to the nomination thread for the Best of Subsim 2014. I thank you for your time and assistance in recognizing the outstanding members of our community.

You can help us decide upon who should receive awards for being our best in the following categories:

Best Poster of the Year - So, have you noticed someone who posts regularly in the forums, he or she is friendly, helpful, interesting, and you enjoy reading what they have to say? Nominate her/him here.

Midshipman of the Year - Which new member (joined in 2013) has been the friendliest/helpful/interesting. Keep your eyes peeled for new guys who join Subsim, share laughs and are good and easy to get along with. Being a new guy ain't easy. Nominees to this category must have a join date of Dec 2012 and later.

Thread of the Year - There are 50~100 new threads every day at Subsim. Some are fluff, some are newsy, some are great points of interest that everyone seems to enjoy. Some threads spawn not only great posts, but memorable discussions that last for weeks and months. Of all the threads started in 2013--let's find that thread we call Thread of the Year. Cannot be a previous winner.

Post of the Year - There are 750 new posts every day at Subsim. That's over 275,000 this year. Of those, one will be Post of the Year 2013. Which one, that's up to you to decide. Cannot be a previous winner.

Funniest Post of the Year - Wit and humor is never in shortage here at SUBSIM. Who's the wittiest and funniest? No, seriously, who?

Mod/Modder of the Year - Let's give it up for the clever fellows who pioneer improvements and fixes to our sub games. For this category, you want to nominate someone who has created a really helpful and popular mod. Also consider how he interacts with the community--is he polite, supportive, and helpful? Does he respond to queries?

Most Helpful Member of the Year - To consider someone for this award, you should feel he is not only friendly and interesting, as is the criteria for the Poster of the Year award, but helpful in evident ways. Such as, this nominee posts links to help solve questions other members have, he supplies answers to questions, and he is civil and doesn't batter people who disagree with him.

Signature of the Year - Very simple: if you see a signature you feel is really interesting, clever, funny, etc., post it here. Sigs should be within the rules pertaining to size. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/faq....ure_image_faqs

There will additional categories that open for nominations in Dec 2014.

**********************

Guidelines
Nominees have to be active members at the time of nomination.
You cannot nominate yourself (duh).
Threads and posts nominated should have begun in 2014.

Format - VERY IMPORTANT!
When you post a nomination, you must include:
The category you are nominating for (Post of the Year, Modder of the Year, etc.)
The name of the nominee (correctly spelled).
The contents of his post or thread in QUOTES. Don't simply say, "He said this" and a link, include at least part of his post.
A link to the post or thread. For sigs, post the image.
Include your reason for the nomination, why you think it deserves an award.

Voting for BOS categories Dec 24, 2014

Throughout this year, if you come across a post or thread that you think is really noteworthy, post a link, the quote, and your argument. This way we can summarize the whole year easily come this December.

Note: Don't post something every day/week, make sure you feel sure that when you post, it will be a worthy candidate for Best Poster, Best Thread, Most Helpful Member, etc. I am not trying to dissuade you from posting what you think is a good candidate, but we don't want 300 nominations for each category. If we end the year with 25~40 each, that would be best.

**********************

Finally, a couple quick points -

We may not all agree on everything that will come up throughout this process, but it does go much more smoothly if we can get along and agree to disagree at times.

Also, please keep this particular forum on-topic at all times, so it's easier to sort through down the road.

Thanks again for your help!

Neal,
SUBSIM

EXAMPLE

Here is an example of the proper format for making a nomination. Let's say I want to nominate this thread for thread of the year, I would post it this way:

Thread of the year
OP: August
Thread: The Model Railroading thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=198810

Quote:
I've been getting back into model railroading in the past few months and i'm finding it very relaxing after a hard days work. It started with a 20 buck box of ho scale engines and freight cars and has grown into the makings of a fairly decent layout. I still have lots of work to do on it, the most important right now to get it insulated and finished before it gets too cold and drives me back to the warmth of a painting and detailing bench set up near the basement wood stove like last year.

The time period is the 1970's and the Railroad is Maine Central in their heyday.
Reason: I think a lot of people here share an interest in Model Railroading. The topic is popular and has received 2700+ replies.

Think about it though, isn't Mexico some sort of American fantasy island?

I mean, the government has absolutely no control over the vast majority of the country, and whoever has the biggest gun wins.

Clever humor and an effective observation.

For mod/modder of the year I nominate TheGeoff. This for his outstanding work on his Sub Commander sim. This is a labour of love being carried out single-handedly and it has come on leaps and bounds in a short space of time. TheGeoff is always grateful of any feedback and he responds promptly and politely and accepts praise or criticism with equal good grace and humour.

Hi,

Modder of the year

I nominate vdr1981- for "The Wolves of Steel" mega mod - making SH5 playable in a very easy install!

Very helpful and interactive, but also the reasoning behind starting the mod -

"It's been very hard for me to witnessing everyday frustrations of new SH5 captains and to read the same threads month after month, year after year, over and over again...I hope something like this will make "life" a bit easier for newcomers or for anyone else who doesn't have much free time to spent countless hours improving and searching for stable modlist. I take the liberty of nominating Jimbuna for Most Helpful Member of the Year :shucks:

Along with the dependable Sailor Steve, Jim has been the most active moderator and spam controller for several years. It's amazing the amount of work this man does behind the scenes. And he never seeks credit. He does it for the joy and support of the community. He is part of the group who set up the York Subsim Meet (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=214387) this summer, and has been to several of the previous meets. On top of that, he always has something nice to say when he posts, even in discussions about heated topics!

Most helpful member of the year? He's got my vote!

TorpX for Modder of the Year
OP: Feb, 2014
TorpX
Topic: [WIP] Improved Ship Physics
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211235

As a serious SH player, problems with the game physics have always bothered me. I've been goofing around with some of the game files (the boat sim files), and have made what I consider a minor, but significant breakthrough. I couldn't really see anyway to improve the ship physics before now. (Of course, this doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of obstacles to realistic physics remaining.)

Now that I understand the sim file elements better, I am starting serious work on a mod for RFB that will improve ship acceleration, turning, and any other aspects that can be helped within this part of the game.

My intention is to finish a mod for the player subs in the near future, and later, if possible, one for the IJ/Allied ships. The chief difficulty in the later is, apart from the number of ships, the difficulty of testing them. Without having playable ships that have a helm, knotmeter and all, I'm not sure how best to go about this.

Also, I have little data as to what the turning radii, of WWII subs and ships should be. If anyone has any information along these lines please don't hesitate to contribute.

TorpX

I nominate TorpX for 'Modder of the Year' because of his perseverance, attention to detail, and fearlessness, when jumping 'over the edge' to learn new things in solving the numerous problems that he has encountered while making ISP.

What started out as a WIP to 1.0 has turned into an enormous, and after release of 2.0, ongoing, Work - In - Progress - toward 2.?.

Almost 8,000 views of ISP from 1.0 to 2.? shows that this mod & topic and the release of 2.? has wide appeal.

I nominate

Thread of the Year - "The Bilge" started by Wolferz {AKA King Zod}

"Welcome to the Bilge.
A club for scallywags and ne'er-do-wells and the occasional pirate radio DJ.

We are an equal opportunity insult club formerly known as Ubirats in the bilges. Since Ubisoft decided to claim explicit domain on everything Ubisoft, whether created by them or not, I've broken all mooring lines with a fire axe. Well, chopped them off really. We are now free to navigate the ins and outs of outrageous misfortune. I hope she doesn't mind too much.

We, the management, welcome one and all for beer and laughs.
We only ask that you keep it clean by not puking on the floor. It smells bad enough in here already.
I got a new coffee maker, Armistead and you're in charge of it. I hope you made enough on the slug bait to buy some coffee and filters. I spent the last of the petty cash on a mani/peti with a happy ending. That Vietnamese girl is good, let me tell ya."

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=214375&page=35

Wolferz led the revolt that led numerous members from Ubisoft here to form the Ubirats. His thread "The Bilge" details the life and times of our honored members, all of which add much needed flavor to Subsim.

{If you would like to become a member, please post your desire to do so in this thread}

my vote for ''best modder'' is always to TheDarkWraith , H.sie and Stiebler.
i believe that these three guys must be award not only for this year but for each year becuase these guys are the only ones who are modding the sh code and have the ability to really change and evolve a game.

i ,also, believe that Skwasjer must be award (not only for this year too) for his ultimate tool ''s3d editor''. - i don't know in which category to put this vote

my vote for ''best thread'' is The new and improved four bearings method (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=179137)

This is more of a niche thread here at SUBSIM, most members do not play fantasy football. If you are a fan of the game ( NFL ) you should give it a whirl in the future ( being next season, 2015 ), it certainly adds to the interest during a sometimes long season.

Check out the thread I am nominating to learn more.

Thread Title: 2014 SUBSIM Fantasy Football (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=215005)

Contents:

Here we go again fans. It's early August and the vermin have begun to surface, knocking their family unconscious in elevators (too soon? :D ) as they squabble for 16 of the most frustrating and exciting fantasy football weeks we've had since...since December last year. Are you ready to make believe and go long for that imaginary team combination we've all dreamed about, that brings a minimum 140 points each week in the hopes of a win?
Reason for the Nomination: Just check out any of the weekly updates, which occur after the final game each week. They are well written, creative and offer a fresh commentary of the results of each week. The guys puts a lot of work into each post and although as mentioned it is more of a niche thread, the quality is there and then some. For those of us who are part of SUBSIM FF, his thread is certainly appreciated. I know I do :yep:
