Welcome to the nomination thread for the Best of Subsim 2013. I thank you for your time and assistance in recognizing the outstanding members of our community.

You can help us decide upon who should receive awards for being our best in the following categories:

Best Poster of the Year - So, have you noticed someone who posts regularly in the forums, he or she is friendly, helpful, interesting, and you enjoy reading what they have to say? Nominate her/him here.

Midshipman of the Year - Which new member (joined in 2013) has been the friendliest/helpful/interesting. Keep your eyes peeled for new guys who join Subsim, share laughs and are good and easy to get along with. Being a new guy ain't easy. Nominees to this category must have a join date of Dec 2012 and later.

Thread of the Year - There are 50~100 new threads every day at Subsim. Some are fluff, some are newsy, some are great points of interest that everyone seems to enjoy. Some threads spawn not only great posts, but memorable discussions that last for weeks and months. Of all the threads started in 2013--let's find that thread we call Thread of the Year. Cannot be a previous winner.

Post of the Year - There are 750 new posts every day at Subsim. That's over 275,000 this year. Of those, one will be Post of the Year 2013. Which one, that's up to you to decide. Cannot be a previous winner.

Funniest Post of the Year - Wit and humor is never in shortage here at SUBSIM. Who's the wittiest and funniest? No, seriously, who?

Mod/Modder of the Year - Let's give it up for the clever fellows who pioneer improvements and fixes to our sub games. For this category, you want to nominate someone who has created a really helpful and popular mod. Also consider how he interacts with the community--is he polite, supportive, and helpful? Does he respond to queries?

Most Helpful Member of the Year - To consider someone for this award, you should feel he is not only friendly and interesting, as is the criteria for the Poster of the Year award, but helpful in evident ways. Such as, this nominee posts links to help solve questions other members have, he supplies answers to questions, and he is civil and doesn't batter people who disagree with him.

Signature of the Year - Very simple: if you see a signature you feel is really interesting, clever, funny, etc., post it here. Sigs should be within the rules pertaining to size. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/faq.php?faq=how_stuff_works_faq#faq_signature_imag e_faqs

There will additional categories that open for nominations in Dec 2013.

**********************

Guidelines
Nominees have to be active members at the time of nomination.
You cannot nominate yourself (duh).
Threads and posts nominated should have begun in 2013.

Format - VERY IMPORTANT!
When you post a nomination, you must include:
The category you are nominating for (Post of the Year, Modder of the Year, etc.)
The name of the nominee (correctly spelled).
The contents of his post or thread in QUOTES. Don't simply say, "He said this" and a link, include at least part of his post.
A link to the post or thread. For sigs, post the image.
Include your reason for the nomination, why you think it deserves an award.

Voting for BOS categories Dec 15, 2013

Throughout this year, if you come across a post or thread that you think is really noteworthy, post a link, the quote, and your argument. This way we can summarize the whole year easily come this December.

Note: Don't post something every day/week, make sure you feel sure that when you post, it will be a worthy candidate for Best Poster, Best Thread, Most Helpful Member, etc. I am not trying to dissuade you from posting what you think is a good candidate, but we don't want 300 nominations for each category. If we end the year with 25~40 each, that would be best.

**********************

Finally, a couple quick points -

We may not all agree on everything that will come up throughout this process, but it does go much more smoothly if we can get along and agree to disagree at times.

Also, please keep this particular forum on-topic at all times, so it's easier to sort through down the road.

Thanks again for your help!

EXAMPLE

Here is an example of the proper format for making a nomination. Let's say I want to nominate this thread for thread of the year, I would post it this way:

Thread of the year
OP: August
Thread: The Model Railroading thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=198810

I've been getting back into model railroading in the past few months and i'm finding it very relaxing after a hard days work. It started with a 20 buck box of ho scale engines and freight cars and has grown into the makings of a fairly decent layout. I still have lots of work to do on it, the most important right now to get it insulated and finished before it gets too cold and drives me back to the warmth of a painting and detailing bench set up near the basement wood stove like last year.

The time period is the 1970's and the Railroad is Maine Central in their heyday.

Reason: I think a lot of people here share an interest in Model Railroading. The topic is popular and has received 2700+ replies.

FINALLY!!! I've waited more than a month for this! :O:

This post is from last year, but it was made after the 2012 awards were finalized, so it counts. :D

1: What you might be missing with the stock game, with regard to the Nav-map and targeting, is the cursor tool when drawing lines. (see 2nd and 3rd image in the Hunt tutorial.) Or a big plotting grid image replacing your Uboat icon on the map. (see this video tutorial) I think these things weren't part of stock SH3. But they are very helpfull tools. Almost indispensible,... but I'm a mapdrawing-nerd. So I created this little mod to be able to point lines, waypoint legs, circle radi, and protractor legs in whichever compass-direction I want. I never used the big Uboat Icond replacing plotting grid as it was a major toll on my first computer. But I'm sure some versions of it are also in the Subsim Downloads section (like this, but it is old, and not completely JSGME-ready)

Why? It just strikes me as the perfect example of going out of the way to help a member in need. The extra measure. The extra mile. All that is best with Subsim. Any more cliches?

Hi, Captains.

Mod/Modder of the Year: Trevally.
This mod is free for download and use by any member of Subsim or owner of SH5
Please post a comment if you enjoyed it.
Thanks - Trevally
Open Horizons II (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1791496&postcount=1/)...and other mods.

I sincerely believe, that Trevally deserves the title of "Best of SUBSIM". He was unjustly forgotten SUBSIM Community. When polled in 2012. From the first day of registration, Trevally actively participates in the forum. Helps "young Captains" in the decision of problems. And, most importantly, bears "on the shoulders" Mod Open Horizons II and other mods. It is imperative to correct this unfortunate misunderstanding.
Award "Best of SUBSIM", must find a Hero!

:salute:
Best Regards!

The contents of his post or thread in QUOTES.
Do you have issues, need a good dose of online Prozac, then this is the thread for you. Discuss your physical, emotional, marital, sexual, general life issues with Dr. Steve of Subsim. Come on in, lay on the couch, knowing you won't be judged here for being you.

Who will be first, who has a question for Dr. Steve O.L.D.
A link to the post or thread. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=200694

Include your reason for the nomination, why you think it deserves an award.
I feel this thread should be considered for a Best of Subsim on several levels. First, it is the good-natured type of stuff that encourages participation by many members. Second, it gives our Sailor Steve a real chance to shine and show his wit. Which he does, quite well and consistently! And that leads to the third reason I nominate this thread--it is funny and gives me something to look forward to each day. I've gotten a few guys at my job hooked on this thread and they don't know a submarine from a bed spring. The year is still young but I think this thread could be in the running come autumn.

I'd like to nominate Skybird because if you venture over to the Helo and Flightsim thread, there are posts littered with alot of his help. Very courteous and non arrogant when it comes to stupid questions as well. I mean, I'm not trying to be biased because he helped me in my own thread, but litterally most of the 109 posts are questions from me and clear conscise answers from him, detailed as well. Very very helpful member if you ask me.

Poster of the Year: Hottentot

Hottentot is regularly one of the most insightful, humorous and polite individuals on the forum. He also writes the best reviews and AARs of general games around, doing a great service to the community. An all around good guy and possessing a top-notch intellect, he is exactly the type of member that SubSim should celebrate. See below for examples.

Review:

While waiting for opportunity to write another AAR, I decided to amuse myself and you with another review. I'm a somewhat sucker for good game sales, and Miasmata happened to be heavily discounted on GOG (http://www.gog.com/gamecard/miasmata) not too long ago. Having played it a while now and thinking it might be something of interest for sim players, I was actually a little surprised to learn there was no thread about it yet. So here we go.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=202856

AAR (Serious)

The concept seems cool. The demo only had three survivors instead of the full game's five, but I already liked how their relationship with each other changes the gameplay. Though It feels a little exaggerated that they all pretty much hate each other: when you are one of the only survivors after the zombie apocalypse, you'd think it would be smart for a while to at least try working with the others and not hating them just because they happen to be, you know, women or black.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=202205

AAR (Humorous)

Sooo: time for another AAR then, finally! You've heard the story before: one that I have been meaning to start for ages already and only now found enough time and inspiration for it, as well as a rare moment in my life when I'm not distracted by anything else (*cough*reviews*cough*). In fact, the roots of this AAR go back to a post I wrote (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...1&postcount=11 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1950491&postcount=11)) last year and which Oberon and Betonov then continued (and it was Betonov's post that started it in the first place). Therefore credit to where credit is due and thank you both for sparking the idea. :)

I posted quotes as per regulation, but you really need to read the threads in their entirety to appreciate this man's true genius.

Thread of the Year

Ask the Next Person a Question

Poster: Feuer Frei

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=202502

Answer the question then leave a question for the next Person...

What's your favourite genre of music?

Feuer Frei's thread is a simple game in the old fashioned SubSim style. That is, a load of fun in indefinite duration, but one that requires the player to think quickly in answering, let the next answer fall to someone else or be repeated. This is the type of community bonding thread that keeps the members smiling even after a hard day at work, home or school and is an example to all of what is good about the forum.

Nominee for Funniest Post Of The Year: Hottentot's 'Biwwy And The New Game'. It's a fictional account of what's really going on in the gaming industry right now.

Contents? Too big to quote the whole thing. Here's a small sample:
Computer: ”What would you like to do?”
Biwwy: ”I'd like to install and play the damn game I paid for!”
Computer: ”Please create Neverheardofyou-client account.”
Biwwy: ”WHAT?!”
Computer: ”Please enter your username, password, phone number, home address, email address, gender, age and specify if you are a virgin or not.”
Biwwy: ”But I don't want any accounts!”
Computer: ”To install the game you bought you need to have account on Neverheardofyou. Are you sure you want to cancel?”
Biwwy: ”OK, fine” [grudgingly writes down fake account details]
Computer: ”Please prove that you are a human by writing down the following code: Dhggh3SHGF8953ufasudG+ASD.”
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2034079&postcount=1

My reason? It's one of the funniest things I've read so far this year.

Hottentot

The category: Post of the Year
The name of the nominee: BigWalleye

The contents:

Thank you, Steve, for your civil and thoughtful response. If I may, I'll try to respond.

Yes, Steve, it is belief. If we could prove it, there would be no need for belief. If Christ came down to Central Park, cured the sick, and raised the dead live on CNN, there would be no need for belief. And no more free will to believe or not.

I have no way of knowing what you formerly believed, but I suspect it was different from the belief that has changed my life. Or maybe my life was more in need of changing.

Of course there are, although I think "a great many" is a stretch. I can only speak from personal knowledge of the transforming power of Christ. Formerly, I followed the teachings of the Buddha, which is a powerful moral philosophy with much in common with the teachings of Jesus. But I never found a God in Buddhism.

First, Jesus never had a problem with people having a good time. His first public miracle was done to keep a party going! (How cool is that?) It is rather the pursuit of good times, to the exclusion of caring for others, that gets us off the track. Second, and more important, if people don't see the impact of Christ in my actions (and too often, I'm sure they don't), my words won't carry much weight. St Francis said: "Preach Christ crucified. Use words when required." My OP was to share the joy I was feeling, not to preach.

A link to the post: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2034239&postcount=23

Reasoning: As I said in the thread too, he started a thread that seemed like a total train wreck and got ridiculed by most of the posters up until second page (including yours truly). Most people would have buggered off and forgotten about it after such reaction, but instead he came back with this post to Steve. From there on he turned it into a civil discussion and in the end pretty much everyone was just wishing happy Easter to each other and the thread had a good feeling in it.

A post like this shows what you can do by being reasonable and gaining respect or at least acceptance here no matter what your opinions are. As Steve has so many times put it, it's not what you say but how you say it and this post (especially when compared to his posts on the thread's first page) is a perfect case in point of that and something that many here could learn from.

Nomination for Most Helpful Member.

Nominee: MikeMike47.

I don't have a specific post to point to, but he has been all over the SH4 and SH5 forums finding things for people and giving recommendations. Most importantly he has gone to bat for people who complained about links being down and not being able to find things. He has PMed Neal and myself to point out and ask about problems with links in Subsim Downloads and followed up to make sure we were doing something about it. Without his badgering (:O:) a lot of these might never have been noticed, let alone fixed.

Yes, the thread is five years old and so is the mod, but any time anybody has a question, a suggestion or needs help, Stiebler is right there to give it. He rarely posts anywhere else these days, but he is constantly posting updates and answering every question that arises.

Maybe that qualifies him for Most Helpful instead, but he also posts updates and helps people with add-ons for NYGM. I think he deserves some recognition.

A warm and moving topic from a member of our community on a topic that doesn't contain any controversial content but more on life's trials and tribulations and how perseverance and tolerance can actually make it all worthwhile in the end.

I'll second that nomination.

Why? --- Well, if one of us guys here had started that topic, it would have been like this:

Post 1: "I saw that condo the other day, had some trouble getting it for the right price, all the papers done, getting rid of my apartment, but at the end I got it. Still some work to do here and there, but I'll keep you informed (maybe)."

Post 2: "Nice!"

Post 3: "Congrats."

Post 4: "Pictures or it didn't happen."

Post 5 - 10: a mixture of post # 2 - 4

Finish

And what do we have here? 89 pages of humour so far. But that seems to have to do with the frau - I still remember a topic started by Frau Kaleun (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=251195) having the hiccups (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=184134)...

Brilliant work by arguably the most knowledgable and gifted modder here on subsim.

The tool is amazing and allows the player to patch out bugs left in by Ubisoft, which inturn allows for much better gameplay, both in realism and functionality.

Thread: 2013 Subsim Fantasy Football Reports
Location: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=207006

Reason for Nomination:

The "reports" themselves are vastly entertaining, and help create interest among both the community and the players. Given that this has become an annual "tradition" for Subsim, it is noteworthy that Gut Wrench has been willing to donate quite a few late hours to the role of "Sports Reporter" - especially since the reports are posted after every Monday Night game.

The humor, wit and camaraderie that is shared and created by the thread makes it noteworthy and well worth a look at for "thread of the year".

Yes - other threads may get more posts or more people posting - but few run as long and stay relevant (and on topic in GT!). Some threads may burn brighter, others hotter - but few last the ~4 months of life that the Subsim FF reports does. What is more - it does it not just once - but every year! How many other posts nominated for "POTY" can claim that?

How many other posts nominated for "POTY" can claim that?

second.

Ok, nominatations are now open for your choice of Moderator of the Year. We have a really good team, there are no bad moderators here. I suggest you base your nom on interactions you have had with a moderator, or observations you have made on a moderator handling an issue. Maybe you were at the U-boat bar too long and had to get an infraction--did the moderator handle it with courtesy and professionalism? Nominate him. Have you seen a moderator defuse a situation with humor or fellowship? Nominate him.

Post you Moderator of the Year candidate here, with you evidence and reason.
Thanks!

I'm nominating Sailor Steve for moderator of the year. He deals with the GT forum fairly and with great humour.

I'll second that nomination!; I suspect though, when he and Jimbuna exchange moderator shift duty on SKYPE there is the 'ceremony of the passing of the QWERTY'! Steve recently apologized twice in one thread, showing himself to be self effacing and a moderate fellow indeed, the benchmark of marshaling the passions of 93,000 :subsim:ing opinionated posters...and he still has time to write songs and make models...GADZOOKS!:Kaleun_Salute:

I want to throw in my vote for Steve the sailor.

He by far yelled at me the most! But I was being an ass, so I deserved it.:D

But he never banned me, always explained what I did wrong, and even allowed me a retort in PMs, when he coulda just told me to go screw!

He has always been good and fair to me, even when I "act up" which I kinda do sometimes.

Sailor Steve, this vote is for you!

As it was posted as NOMINATATIONS are now open?
:hmmm:
I'm as confoundacated as you!
:haha:

(Where's the Spell Check Nazi when you need him?)

Well, I nominate Jim, as it shouldn't be a run away, but my vote is a toss up, meaning, it's for sale...
