View Full Version : Which Locations Are ESSENTIAL?

I've been thinking about the itinerary for the 2010 meet, and I've come to the conclusion that there are simply too many naval and maritime sites of interest in New England. Neal has already said that he wants to do the Submarine Force Museum, Battleship Cove, and the Boston Navy Yard at the very least, and he's mentioned the Boston Freedom Trail recently as a "potential" stop.

Since I've been selected to help manage the 2010 meet, I'm going to ask everyone which places they feel are absolutely essential, which would make an interesting side-trip, and which should just be outright ignored. The 2011 meet will be overseas and the 2012 meet probably won't be in New England again. Now is the time to come out and tell us what you'd like to see.

I have a feeling this meet is going to be a hectic one! :o

I picked:

Sub force museum / USS Nautilus
USCG Eagle / CG Academy
USS Salem
Battleship Cove
Boston Navy Yard

Seeing all that would make for a pretty busy 4 day weekend.

I voted primarily for the navy ones - Nautilus, Battleship Cove, Boston Navy Yard, Salem and Albacore. Everything else would be a nice bonus but what I really would like to get to is the ships.

1. sub force museum!
2. Battleship cove (tied with first)
3. USS Constitution
4. USS Albacore

Don't care after that. Game for anything. The air museums are ok, but I live near three really cool ones, so it'd be tough to top them.

If we're going to be in Boston and we have time, Does Bunker Hill battlefield have a park? That would be cool to stop by that if there was time.:hmmm:

If this picture doesn't make you want to visit Battleship Cove, you might as well just stay home. :O:

Yeah there's a park and an observation tower and it is close to the Navy Yard.

We should probably be figuring that Boston and points north will take a whole day at least. The drive up and touring the USS Constitution, it's attached museum and the Cassin Young alone are going to take a half day. A jaunt from there up to the Albacore after lunch then the trip back down to NL and we'll probably be stopping to eat supper on the way back.

This is why I think we should locate home base as close to the middle of the sites we want to visit as possible so as to lessen the time we're stuck in the car.

:nope: Who wants to look at a bunch of old boats anyway?:O:

Seriously, though, when we go on board the Joseph P. Kennedy I can give you a personalized tour. She is, after all, apparently identical to my old Brinkley Bass. And yes, I'll bet that after 40 years I can still find the radio shack, and my exact bunk!:sunny:

As for Boston, I jus' GOTS to see Constitution! That would be a once-in-a-lifetime dream for moi.

And it looks like she's going to be in tip top condition for our trip too!

USS Constitution is in a major renovation period to further restore her to an 1812 configuration. The construction phase begain in October of 2007 and is schedueld to be completed spring/summer of 2010. A portion of the spar (top) deck roofing will come off today and the mast and yards will be up-rigged in the upcoming months. Further information and pictures can be found at http://www.history.navy.mil/ussconstitution.
