Ubisoft: we will launch a special contest for the Silent Hunter fans, letting them create “conning tower” emblems that will be featured in the final game. Here are the contest rules that will be posted on our official forums and website, and we would also like to have then posted on the Subsim website/forums if you agree.

1. Create a submarine conning tower emblem respecting the following:
- The emblem must identify itself in the World War 2 era
- No offensive subjects allowed
- The image must be without any background(so it can be applied to the submarine)
2. Save the image to a PNG file, with the resolution 128x128 pixels, 32 bit
3. Send the file to gkane@ubisoft.com (gkane@ubisoft.com)
4. The devteam will review each image and make a first selection
5. With the selected images, a poll will be created at a later date and you guys will be able to vote for your favorite one
6. The top 10 voted conning tower emblems will be incorporated into the final game, for everybody to see and use
You have one month to create and send in your images (steps 1-3) starting today, Friday October 2nd , up to Monday November 2nd

Official Announcement on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yq5PsN-hEI&feature=fvsr

Edit by webster to add this new information from ubisoft:

FINAL UPDATE: The submission time is over. Over 150 emblems have been submitted! Good Job! Now it's the dev's turn to make the first selection, and you will be able to start voting for your favorite one starting on the 14th of December!

I sent one submission in for the contest after I saw longam's post. She looks better at this size than the 128x128 pixel resolution they requested, but those are the rules. Wish me luck.

Maybe I should also design something with soup in it. ;)

I read it as "No offensive subjects", which I would interpret as maybe swastikas but more likely nudes and such.

Your 'Devil' is kinda cute.

But my vote has to go for Torpy's mermaid.

In a game like SH I prefer to play with the original historic tower emblems over user created stuff. This should be a simulation and not an action game like Need For Speed and other car racers where players can create their own look of the cars.

Even better they give us a choice - you get your historic accuracy... and I get a leggy devil girl... hopefully the included emblems will be mod-able so each can have their own preference.

Considering that historical uboat commanders and crews were able to choose any emblema, including those of their own creation, wouldn't a game that didn't allow the player this option be a-historical?

And a choice available, is not a choice enforced :)

http://i752.photobucket.com/albums/xx161/LiveGoat/U-boats/Emblems/AusschussKind-1.pngThis is a custom emblem I've been using in SH3 it's based on a trading card from a german magazine from around the 1930's. It's an optical illusion. I thought it'd be cool because it's time period specific and it could very well have been something a U-boat captain would see and be inspired to use. It's simple but it looks authentic. I've included a pic of the actual card as well. The png is in a black square (might not be visible depending on your background color).

http://i752.photobucket.com/albums/xx161/LiveGoat/U-boats/Emblems/card49.jpg

Kaleun_Endrass
10-11-09, 10:36 AM
The description of the card says:
"Starrt man zwei Minuten angestrengt auf das weiße Kreuz und schaut dann auf eine weiße Fläche, so sieht man die Blätter grün, die Blüte rot und den Untergrund in einem schönen Violett."

Translation: "Staring intensively two minutes at the white cross and looking on a white surface right after, you will see the leaves green, the bloom in red and the background in a beautiful purple."

They should have written, that you can see that illusion only if you blink.

Nice one btw.

Torplexed is the man. :yeah: and one of the best artist so far that I've seen on these Subsim forums, but who was the Lady artist for the Subsim Werewolf hunt?? Ana, ava? I believe she is somewhere around Bucharest ? and she has posted one or two times on the Werewolf Hunt thread. Neal knows of her I'm sure. She would be a great one to contribute a "Conning Tower Emblem"

Here is one of her works for the Subsim hunt. ( Her sig is at bottom left with hand pointing at it. )

Do you use your own made up name then for your captain or do you impersonate another real life captain? A tower emblem is no different than making up your own captain's name.

cxsinsanity
10-12-09, 06:27 AM
I think it's the captains choise for the emblem. And in the fact, you are captain of your boat, so it's your choise. And you can select a non historical emblem too. This would be historical i think. :hmmm:

Kaleun_Endrass
10-12-09, 07:46 AM
I prefer to select the historical correct emblems for my boats. If I'm assigned to U47 then it's the bull, if it's U48 then it's the black cat and if it's U201 then the snowman decorates my conning tower.
First I thought this contest is just stupid, but now I think it could lead to a better identification with the players avatar, the boat and crew. You create a fictional identity when starting a career, then you select your individual emblem and get the feeling of "thats my boat, harrrghhaaa". It's quite possible I change my attitude...

Very cool. Seeing a grim reaper on a conning tower would've been quite unsettling, probably like seeing Topp's Red Devil. That is provided one was ever lucky enough to see the sub before it attacked in the first place.

True dat. I guess the lookouts would be a little too preoccupied to admire the detailing. :DL

LOOKOUT 1: "I say, chappy, that's a hun conning tower coming this way, is it not?"

LOOKOUT 2: "Rather! Shall we rouse the lads?"

LOOKOUT 1: "Just a minute. Hallo, what do we have here?"

LOOKOUT 2: "What what, old trench?"

LOOKOUT 1: "Looks to be a logo of some sort."

LOOKOUT 2: "Let's have a look (raises binoculars). Zounds, tiger, I think you may be on to something."

LOOKOUT 1: "Those jerries love to draw little pictures, eh?"

LOOKOUT 2: "Indeed. Sort of puts one in mind of a devil, doesn't it?"

LOOKOUT 1: "I was thinking more of a satyr, actually."

LOOKOUT 2: "I suppose it could be, yes."

LOOKOUT 1: "Wait, what's that?"

LOOKOUT 2: "Hmm?"

LOOKOUT 1: "Yes. Yes, yes... yes, that's most certainly a projectile of some sort coming out the front end."

LOOKOUT 2: "Certainly looks that way, yes."

LOOKOUT 1: "I don't want to seem presumptuous, but I'm guessing it's a torpedo of some sort."

LOOKOUT 2: "It IS traveling through the water."

LOOKOUT 1: "Perhaps we should alert the lads."

LOOKOUT 2: "But we ARE sure it's a satyr and not a devil that is on the conning tower?"

LOOKOUT 1 (looking through binoculars): Wait... it's most certainly a devil. My apologies, old boy for doubting you."

LOOKOUT 2: "It's quite alright, chap. Couldn't be helped."

LOOKING 1: "It is rather menacing, isn't it?"

LOOKOUT 2: "What is?"

LOOKOUT 1: "The devil on the conning tower. As if they're taking a piss."

LOOKOUT 2: "At us, you mean?"

LOOKOUT 1: "Why certainly. I mean you don't think they'd go through all the damn trouble to paint a damn devil on their bridge to alienate the bloody french would they?"

LOOKOUT 2: "I suppose you're right. I'll wake the lads."

LOOKOUT 1: "Too late."

LOOKOUT 2: "How's that?"

(huge explosion)

the trouble i see with this is im thinking the in game size will be small and most detail will be blurred out or not even visable so the excellent work we see will not show up.

i hope im wrong but i would bet only the large scale elements in these emblems will be visable
Hi WEBSTER when I did picture of Conning Tower all Emblems were 128x128 in size they are slightly higher this is due to croping of full picture from 1920x1080 to forum size of 1024x786 but hopefully they should show on tower as is,but you will know more about this than I.
@Torplexed your Emblem of mermaid is great Conning Tower babes look good too,They would distract me to ? Well not so much these days I'm 70 more of a quick twinge LOL

Thanks Red Heat!

Gunfighter's conning tower of emblems kinda reminds me of the conning tower of cartoon babes I had for a while. Anything to distract or throw off enemy fire. :D

I would love to know how you did that, Torp...currently working with tower emblems for an Ops Monsun mod (historical German emblems)... and I have a good idea how those tiles replicate around the 3D tower. What you have there would appear to be next to impossible to pull off without bits n' pieces of the images popping up on the splash shield... and other odd places.

On a side note: I'd be distracted too. :smug:

Gunfighter: More excellent emblems! :salute:

Akula: I used Privateer's superb "Turm Emblems Your Way" mod for the oversized conning tower art effect. It was a SH3 mod, so I don't know if it'll work with Operation Monsun, but you can give it a look.....:ping:

can i buy the rights to use that emblem on my sh5 sub? $$$$$

its such unique quality you rarely get to see now a days, picaso made millions selling pictures just like that :yep:

besides going for all the pretty looking ones, some home made looking art work would add some realism since not every boat had someone who was artistic

EDIT - (well ok, on second thought i guess they could go find one at port)

Does PNG support more than one transparent 'color'? If not, what color preferably should be used as background?

Transparency isn't a color. It's an area(s) in the image without any color information, which allows whatever it is underneath the image to be seen through the transparent area(s).

Malmer
11-18-09, 05:28 PM
It's for anti-aliasing a vector emblem with the/a background; the background color WILL affect the edges of the emblem.

Hi if you select(With selection Wand or magic Wand do not feather this area) area around Emblem and choose the colour to fill this area with flood fill tool I have just tried this with several colours on PNG image and it worked OK hope this helps If it will not work check to see if image is 8bit Colour or more if its more reduce to 8bit.

FAN-TA-STIC
Do you have it as HI-RES image?
800x800 is as hi-res as it gets. I kept it relatively low to keep me from going ballistic with the details since they won't show up anyway once it's down-res'd.

If it doesn't make it to the game I can post it here so anyone who feels like it, may do whatever he/she wants with it. Be it emblem for the sub or bumper stickers :DL

I managed - somewhat - to create an 8-bit mask for the vector object. Now I can save my .PNG's with 32 bit depth instead of 24. (As it seems PNG24 only handles one color as transparency (1-bit).)

Still the anti-aliased edges are not perfect, but the bitmap can be used on any background. :salute:

2. Save the image to a PNG file, with the resolution 128x128 pixels, 32 bit
...

I am working in Photoshop, and I can't save it in 32 bit, only 8 or 16. And if I save for web and devices, I choose PNG-24, would that be OK, or will my entry be discarded?

Thanks for any help
