After buying SH5, will buy a 1GB card. Nvidia this time I think.:D

As I have now quad core and 4gb of memory, no need to upgrade everything I hope.:DL

HanSolo78

Maybe it should also be recognized that a certain amount of graphics memory does not present the power of a video card to play a high detailed game with lots of polygons.

For example: a Radeon 3650 with 1GB memory is not capable of displaying good FPS in modern games because of the slow GPU! :88)

@the dev team

what about the importance of multi CPU systems?
For example: SH3 (SH4 I do not really know) only supports 1 CPU and in situations with several AI units the FPS is very dependend on the CPU and with higher CPU frequency the FPS improves.

I think a modern engine should minimum use 2 CPU cores.
What do you think dev team?

best greetings
Han

well its kinda sh4's fault lol, we or i should say i and many others had no choice but to upgrade our computer just to play sh4 properly so naturally we made the smart move of getting a quality video card at that time out of self preservation more than not minding paying for an expensive card.

after all most video cards are outdated before you can get home to install them :damn:

its not reflected anywhere in the poll but i would bet many upgraded to quad cpu's at that time too, i know i did.

@ WEBSTER

your explanation about the upgrade for SHIV was spot on for me, I had a ATI X1650 with 512 on it and that was my greatest card until it overheated and seized up (i still mourn it's loss) my next card (bought from necessity )was an ATI HD2400, worst decision ever! it still works to this day, in my stepdad's music computer. so to keep myself sane i bought an ATI HD3450 with 512 and it almost matches my orig. X1650.

(AMD Phenom II X4 [quad-core] 955 Black Edition OC'd to 3.8GHz on an Asus Crosshair Formula III MB with 8 GB Ram @ 1600MHz on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit pumping data to that card!). Plus it helps having 2 X WD VelociRaptors in a RAID 0 to move data quickly...
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit runs SH3 and SH4 with no problems btw.

the results should be predictable. 512 Mb video cards will win. second place 1gb video cards and then the rest.

I used to have a BFG 1gb video card IIRC, but it broke down, and my usual pc shop didn't have another 1gb video cards at the time (March 2009). But they explained me that that having the extra 512mb wouldn't really render much better graphics. The GPU is of greater importance. So even though, my video ram was half of what I had before, the speed of the GPU was increased.

SLI or Crossfire is almost always of benefit and itīs not an implementation issue. So SH5, as every other graphical application too, will automatically support it.

As far as I know, double-card technologies on both the nVidia or ATI front, are complicated to implement in the engine. My impression has been (in the Subsim meet) that they won't be implemented because of the complication of having to program them at the native level.

I wonder if we also need a thread/poll about the GPU (as in, ATI 5870 or NVidia GTX280, but more general, of course) just so we have both halves of the equation accounted for. Although a lot of these cards listed are great in ram and GPU, in the past (as a marketing gimmick) I have seen many cards paired with 512MB or more of slow ram with a poor GPU, which would not do well in SH5. While it may tell the same story in the end, it could be intriguing none the less.

"optional" just means what it will borrow from your systems ram which they will all do when they run out of onboard ram so the "optional" ram specs is meaningless and is just used as a selling ploy to confuse people.

dedicated ram = onboard ram (ram that you really have)

optional ram = what it will borrow from your system (smoke & mirrors term used for marketing purposes)

Sure, but as long as I don't have a 64 bit O/S installed, i can just as well dedicate the 768 MB of ram to my graphics card since Vista 32 can't handle more than 3 GB. I just don't think that it will make any difference since the regular ram probably doesn't make it faster.

Well just bought the UBoat expansion for SH4 (only $9.99 online @ UbiStore) and my current card, GTX 280 OC, doesn't even break a sweat. I'm redoing the FX for the game because the smoke, fire, and all are just piss poor. Needs some major visual overhauls. We'll see how the video card handles it after I've made the changes.
I'll probably be buying an nVidia 300 series card when SH V comes out. Not because I probably need to but because I can and like to stay up-to-date with computer hardware. Hell, I'll probably be putting in a new AMD CPU also since they should have something screaming around 4GHz by then. I got a lot of old computer stuff I should put up on e-bay. Anyone needing a complete system that was top of the line one day (has a BFGTech 8800GTX OC in it with AMD Athlon FX-62)? PM if interested. Like Racerboy, I hope to upgrade to nVidia 300 next June/July, after 2-3 months of getting familiar with SH5.

I prefer ATI cards picture, but fact that Oleg is applying nVidia "friendly codes" in upcoming Battle of Britain SoW... gave me no choice.

* * *
There's just small problem, that Oleg is "lost in a time and space" with his project and nobody knows possible date (year) of release... so I might end up with some ATI 5870, afterall...

ATI 4870x2. 2 gig in all. Alright card. SH4 plays with silly high frames.

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256MB. Intel Core 2 Duo processor 2.5GB, 4GB RAM. SH4 and Rainbow Six Vegas runs fine on this. Just hope SH5 can run on this.

Ati RADEON X-1950 XTX 512Mb

A bit old, but was pretty much top shelf when I bought it. Am thinking of going for dual cards when I replace it.

As for CPU, a dual-core Athlon 64 FX-62 @ 2.8GHz w 2GB RAM.

I got all of this back in 2006, so some components are a little old now.

Suppose I might think of building a new one some time, or just replacing video card in the interim.

FYI, anyone wanting to look into graphics cards and other hardware, this is a very handy site:

BUMP

And a note on SLI rigs: having 2 cards with 512MB memory still "only" gives you 512MB, not 1024, because memory from 1 card is cloned. Not sure, but I think it applies to 2xGPU cards as well (GTX295, etc). ;)

Should i look for a graphics card with the highest GPU as well as the highest memory . A gigabyte HD5870 has an 850mhz core clock and 1gb of memory for $589 and a palit gtx295 has 576mhz core clock and 1792mb of memory . Which one is best for gaming ?

Bit OT, but: I wouldn't bother with the GTX295. Being a dual-GPU card, you can expect anything from 10 to 60% (maybe little more) in performance gain (compared to same single GPU), but it really depends on the game. Far too unpredictable imho. And it's powerhungry, quite a bit more so than the 5770. Another strike against it is that it has 896MB effectively, compared to 1024MB on the radeon.

TBH, I'd wait and see what Nvidia is coming up with early next year. At this point you "should" buy the Radeon 5770/5750, but only because of a lack of competition.

*meant the 58xx offcourse, 5700 series is out so I'm confused. :88)

This is an big issue with ATI, from a 5870 review:

""Yowzers -- Okay, so in the past we've talked a lot about dual-GPU gaming and the issues that come along with it. ATI's big challenge is that new games require a driver update or hotfix to become multi-GPU compatible. We are nearly a year away from the moment when the 4870 X2 was released, and it is with some frustration that I still have to report that ATI still has not implemented user based multi-GPU profiles. E.g. if a totally hot new game you just picked up is not yet supported by the driver, you could create your own profile and maximize performance. ATI... dudes... get that done, this is getting embarrassing.""
