Using a low end machine with 1 GB RAM I was surprised to find that stuttering was not so much a problem, but real time is slowing down (approximately three real seconds for one indicated second), especially in large scenarios. It took me quite a while to note that. To cope with this I’m satisfied with the following three simple settings:

Water surface geometry: medium
Ocean advance display options: wave animation period: value 29999 (i.e. as slow as possible)
Game speed: 2x
No additional changes to the settings

The results for me have been real time, good graphics and nearly no stuttering.

Are there any other tipps?

Well, the main FPS hogs are the 3D water surface, especially if it's animated, and the smoke/wake quality (which determines how long they last before fading away). AA and AF also have a large effect on FPS for slow machines. The other settings are either things you really don't want to tone down if at all possible (ship model detail and damage effects), or don't have that much effect. But I always kill lens flare, even though I have a top-end machine, because I'm looking through my eyes, not a camera :).

Did some tweaking again. Turning off water surface geometry indeed seems to have the most positive effect on frame rates.
