You lost me donut. Your internet comes into your home via the telephone lines?

My phone uses DSL line.>>> http://www.fcc.gov/voip/
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a technology that allows you to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line. Some VoIP services may only allow you to call other people using the same service, but others may allow you to call anyone who has a telephone number - including local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers. Also, while some VoIP services only work over your computer or a special VoIP phone,>>>http://voip.about.com/od/hardware/a/SpecialPhones.htm other USB. services allow you to use a traditional phone connected to a VoIP adapter. BUT these need a external powered usb hub.

Never trust these USB gimmicks.

These are companies that are newer and not as scrutinized as the main companies are.

What about 911? At best the signal has to travel half the country just to be routed back to local emergency. And while the net can survive a nuc attack lag and hiccups are not the best to have when someone is having a heart attack or is being robbed.

I hate to speak for the big guys but I strongly suggest you pay for the phone service.

OP. has nothing to do w/ paying or not. This is simply the future wave of technology that allows you to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection.

I was just farting around looking for .gif files. Looked cool so I grabbed it. The simplicity of the steam engine always facinated me.

Actually - I know a couple of people that swear by Vonage VoIP - they just plug the base set into the router - like your describing. Personally - the only VoIP I am familiar with is what thru a massive Lucent switch tied to a fragmented T3. That thing is a monster - but works great.

Residential service I can't speak to - but check with some of the big guys and see if they offer it to homes. They all offer it to businesses.

I'm not a fan of VOIP just because it uses other companies phone lines.

It's called competition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CLEC). This happened when the "Baby Bells" were created and every telephone company has access to another's. If it wasn't for this...AT&T would still have a monopoly on the system.
