What about the framerate? I could run vanilla SH4 pretty ok on my laptop but "only" pretty ok. How much has it gone down??? I never tested 1.4 I must add, did that increase the framerate???

I don't see any difference in performance, except that the loading times (which are better compared to 1.4, which was better compared to earlier versions) :-?

Ah, what kind of frame rates are you looking for? Are you spending more time and money worried about frame rates getting to 100+ or is you machine cranking 5 FPS all the time. My weak 3200+, 2 gig DDR and 7800 GS gets me 30+ frames. Pretty respectable for 4 year old machine that is run by chipmunks.

It could be a hardware-specific problem, my humble Pentium D 3.0GHz/Radeon X1600 512mb/1G DDR runs it fine, with only occasional slowdowns at bad weather

just found out it was old creative drivers i was using, =updated.

i test sh4 with fraps running to make small vids..

fairly smooth frames again, i would say its a little choppy here and there..still

Performance is better than SH4 1.4, loadtimes are way faster.
Only GFX bug i have are the watchmen on deck missing their eyes, rest of the crew has eyes. Im using the official forceware 169.25 and i have tried several newer betas with no luck.

One question before I buy: What sort of protection does the expansion use? My SH4 uses Securom and needs the disc in the drive. But since the expansion is sold online, is there some online verification that requires you to be online when playing? Because that's something that I could not do. Or does it need the SH4 disc? It would be nice if you could let me know.

I've had the eyes problem since 1.4. I just ignore it, it's no problem as my watch crew can spot ships without them as they are trained in the ways of the jedi and they simply use the fource:arrgh!:.

Seriousley tho, not noticed any loss of frame rate infact the game runs a lot smoother on my rig than 1.4 did, especially around ports. Overall I am quite happy with it, the USN could have used some attention. More equipment for the subs eg. FM sonar, better detailed models but I can live with it. Worth the £9.99 I spent for it.

To be perfectly honest, the last time I played my SH4 was with version 1.2 - I really appreciate this step even more on my laptop because it allows me to swap the drive for a second battery. So its not needed for the 1.5 that is the expension either?

Yep, I can confirm it too, I'm getting crew stuck on the deck as well. I think this happens after starting from an on-patrol save.

Never save when submerged. Its a known problem and have been so since SH3 :)

If you don't have realistic Sensors ticked on the options you get a black screen at the hydrophone station.

Maybe take alook at your PC, For $10 thats a good buy i brought it for $29.95 and im happy with that.

Frame rates a disaster? Smooth gameplay here.
No blank screen bug? You have some option turned off

Crew under water. Dont get that either well i haven't loaded a save game - I think thats why it bugs out.

Strange, I hav loaded alot of savegames both submerged and on surface. I havent been able to produce that bug.

Are you running ROW or PE 1.1alpha? - it sounds like it, beacuse I never had that bug with the sonarguy on the stock SH 1.5. I wrote in the faq for ROW that there is a small problem with the camera, which need an update, don't blame the game-developers for bugs with ROW and the addon! ;)

When I tried to do a turn in the Type IX in reverse, the rudder kept coming back to amidships (instead of completing the turn first), so that I never was able to really turn at all.

In the Type IX control room, near the ladder to the conning tower, there's a section of piping that pulsates back and forth. :shifty:

The above posts represent some of the reasons why I have no intention of installing this Add On for months yet. I purchased it in order to support the Franchise, but for me, until there is a full U Boat Atlantic Campaign available in 1.5, this Add On is a whole load of trouble for very little gain. Just a personal opinion.

I started a new career as an American (wanted to check out which features were included for it) and the classic cant-complete-mission bug is here again. I was assigned to patrol off of Tokyo (using the guide here at SS, I drew out a 100nm circle and patrolled for 48 hours) but its been four days now, and the mission wont complete :shifty:

(And yes, I did the mousewheel thing)

my machine is pretty old and the only time the frame rate drops into single digits is in port. But boy they do look great. So as long as i don't look at where ive been and concentrate on where im going, then it's all fine! :lol:

Actually pretty impressed with this addon so far.

First I have to say that this add-on is a must have for a SH4 player:up: and especially the new sub upgrade system is much better than the original one.

Besides the standard SH4 flaws, the only seriously annoying thing is the American voices on German subs:damn:
But I simply use the SH3 + GWX2 voices as a temporary solution.

But German crews sure are strange, apparently they're extremely good at holding their breath:-? so looks like I have that crew bug as well, but it only happened for the first time near the end of my first mission, and I dind't save while submerged so I guess it just happens randomly..

The transparant "bug" isnt a bug i think. Maybe a graphicsengine limitation just as the lights from the lighttowers shining through objects. I guess they would have fixed it if they could. The way to get rid of the transparent thing is to turn off volumetric fog.

The way to get rid of the transparent thing is to turn off volumetric fog.
No, only a turn off enviromental filter cure this bug.

The bug is the result of an incorrect programming of the Z-order during the render process. I develop 3D entertainemnt applications for years and this is a typical beginner mistake in the use of pixel-shader with render engines.

I think i may have encountered a bug, dunno why it happens but after a certain time under water teh CO2 levels just keep going up and dont refresh even after you surface, its really annoying because i can't make it back to base with the levels i have now.

Anyone else have this problem?

Another person reported this CO2 thing. I have not seen it yet.
I HAVE, however, seen compressed air spontaneously run out after ordering a crash dive. It only seems to happen when crash diving, normal dives don't affect it. However it charges back up when you surface.
With that though, I have noticed a positive feature: it seems like compressed air is actually used by the boat while manuevering now instead of being a basically useless stat. :)

And weird. Today I reloaded the save game from yesterday where my crew wasn't leaving the conning tower, and they now go in properly again when I dive. Go figure!

Playing with everything enabled except external view and manual targetting. Its still 1943 and a piece of cake - 71000 tons after two patrols:lol: Of course i can't miss with auto targetting...:roll:

Escort protection for shipping in the Indian Ocean was at first greatly lacking, because the British just didn't expect the U-boats to show up there. It was until later that the situation changed.

Unfortunately, i have the crew-on-bridge-while-underwater-problem myself, and my first patrol ended in tears as my co2-levels went banzai while surfaced, and my men died.

Tried a new patrol now, and found that the crew leaves the bridge (and come back when I surface) if I DONT save the game and reload OR alt+tab. Finished an entire patrol from Penang and back with lots of lurking about looking for the Allies, and no problemos. (Besides my expensive Falke torpedo going boom approx 400 metres from my boat:cry:)

PS: I still get the old stuttering if I let the game run on both cpu cores, but if I limit it to one, it runs like butter. The game looks awesome, runs great and that IXD2 is one beautiful 3D model. Hooray!

Another small thing I found - the engine sound positioning is backwards when in the interior of the boat. The sounds are coming from the fore of the boat when the engines are aft of the command room. The bow wake sound, conversely, is coming from the aft.

Yep, I hope I'm not going blind...I don't see any way to adjust the fish either; in addition, the attack map doesn't seem to have a key anymore (i.e. can't find it). It's talked about in the revamped help pages, but it is no longer listed among the stations with a key.

I too have noticed the watch crew enjoying a swim down in the deep depths but I also noticed the radar automatically turn on after you have shut it off. Really don't want to give my position up that easilly. Also it comes on after you surface.
I think its possible the radar turns on from high seas or bad weather. It would seem logical if it does turn on immediately when you surface. Has anyone else notice this. I have noticed it during time compression and at normal time-compression.

I don't see any way to get to the attack map anymore (and therefore the fish guages); it's not listed in the key commands. Perhaps it's just the IXD2.

No shortcut key that i know of but if you are in your periscope view there are 10 square buttons at the bottom, button 7 is the attack map view, in there are the speed and depth settings.Hope it helps.

Other than the lack of german voices, these audio files stand out as "odd," as they're all spoken in english

I really like the addon especially since I don't like the "normal" pacific theatre represented in SH4. However I've noticed a few bugs:

- Light flaks on IX completely useless due to false / bad positioned crosshairs, i.d. the guns shoot at the middle of the screen, but the crosshairs are not centered. This also means that the AI never hits with these guns. 37mm flaks work alright, 20mm quad seems broken aswell.

- Opening torpedotubes only works for a single tube, i.d. if you are preparing a fan shot you cannot open all the required tubes.

- Some specials seem broken, e.g. Torpedo-Specialist (or Expert) is supposed to give you a small boost to the torp speed in general, yet that boost is way too high or gets applied in a wrong way (time to target for a 2 mile distance run under 10 seconds...).

- Flak stations and deck gun stations can be manned even in storms (quite handy :) ).

- 20mm flaks in general have very low ammunition (~200).

- Typ XVIII sub seems rather weak due to low speed and insufficient fuel reserves - while the walther device enables superfast submerged speed it only has very limited fuel. Surface speed and normal submerged speed are lower compared to the IX which is horrible since you have to travel so long distances.

There are a couple of other minor ones aswell, but the above are the most annoying for me.

Try if you can go into the conning-tower.
In SH3, you can go there and manually flip the open-tube switches, of the tubes you want to open.

New American mission; saved whilst setting options, crew, guns & sensors; and then again in port. Sailed out of Pearl, saved, exit to Windows to perform RL (real life) chores.

Relaunched, reloaded, and ... :down: ... "Passing Thermal Layer" every few seconds.

The XVIII was projected to have only a 3000-nautical mile endurance on diesels, and that's what the game models it as. Can always be tweaked with S3D if you want to make it like a Type XXI.

There are a few bugs reported here that i have never seen or managed to produce.
Try do a clean install. First SH4 then addon... no patches between. This way one can be sure there are no files left from mods or similar problems that may have occured.

Type IX does 22 knots on the surface in a quick mission. The real thing could do only 19.2. Even after editing this in S3D I still was making 22 knots.

More on the speed thing. This seems really screwed up. In the Type IX, tell the CE to set speed to, say, 15 knots, and the boat will run at 17. Tell the CE to set speed to 10 knots, he will acknowledge 10 knots, but the game sets it to 12.

Something here is just not right. I did not have any crewmen with special abilities to increase the submarine's speed. This problem does not exist with the American boats I have tried out.

On another note, I just realized something with the voice acting: all of the crew models move their lips as if they were speaking in German, no matter if German or English crew voices are used. I guess this explains why it looks like the American crewmen make a guppy impression sometimes when they speak. :88)

Yep, all of the lip movments are in German, even for the American crews.

This Addon is an big bug !

The german cruiser "Deutschland" comes without any sound and it seems that they have stolen this unit from Gerome, who modded this unit. :down:
Reason : They forgott the DSD.file of this unit.:huh:

I play 1.4 cause it is better.

In my eyes the producers of this addon are noobs, bloddy noobs.
The modders from this community got more knowledge as this nooby UBI-team.

Explain this :

Unit-folder of "Deutschland" called : NCA_Deutschland
Some files of this ship called NBC_GrafSpee_xxx and other files called NCA_Deutschland_xxx.

Normaly all files of an unit got same names. Why this unit an some other units of this addon got different name-files ?
Did your team didnt know where everyone is working on ?

This filename-structure is an example for this addon. In German we say " das ist absoluter Kuddelmuddel ".

The most modders here from this community didnt earn any money for their work and they produce much more better things as i ever seen from UBI and this modders didnt use kashmir for their work.
They work with small selfmade-tools.
Give them your kashmir-tool and you will see that SH4 grows up to an big nice subsim without this stupid bugs.

The artist thought the ship as a battlecruiser -> NBC which is what it was designed as.

When I created the folder to put the ship in the game I used the real Kriegsmarine classification from 1940, of Heavy Cruiser -> CA -> NCA

I didn't change the dat file name since I wanted the artists not to be confused (too much). Also since the Graf Spee was long gone by the time the U-boat campaign starts, I thought it was more appropriate to use the class name of "Deustschland".

Sorry if this mixup of file names is disturbing to you.
A) it doesn't affect you as a player. The game takes place not in file explorer but in 3D graphics.
B) its not a proof that we stole the model from anyone, which of course we did NOT!

Again, i would be more careful before launching accusation like that in an open forum.

why did any artist of your team work out the Graf Spee for an szenario in Pacific ?
Didnt they know that the Spee was gone in december 1939 ?
Your explanation of this "Kuddelmuddel" doesnt make any sense to me ! Sorry for that.
I take a look to the 3Dmoddel and to the number of polygons of this unit.
After this i will see clearer.

As to why we included the Graf Spee/Deutschland class?

Because commerce raiding in distant waters was the purpose of that class of ships.

Yes, the add-on is to some extent a what if scenario.

Figured it out. Tweaking the displacement values caused the ship speeds to go up. Odd, because the ones used as stock are not what why my resources say. Probably doesn't really matter anyways, since we're not out hunting enemy subs. ;)

sound of raising the observation scope in the conning tower isnt there.

orders are given by the comsubpac (must be BDU).

the small compass for the tools help is a US compass!

the small lamp for switching auto update modus (for TDC) in the conning tower is always on (how to check, if auto mode is on or off??)

heads of deckwatch are transparent in some weather conditions.

mission goals are not in the grid they speak about. my mission orders were: go to grid sz, but the yellow star was painted in another grid.

open two or more tubes at the same time doesnt run correctly. (possible in conning tower, but impossible at periscope or attack map)

repair and gun crews are leaving position when watch changes. yes, its realistic, but you have to put them back to work after each 4 hours, when damage should be repaired as fast as possible. thats enervous.

yes, same here. i mentioned it when checking my success in the wardiary. the recognition manual gives the same models for both, so you cant evade this problem.

Community forums are such an interesting place. I generally find that the lack of conversational implicature (basically: communicated intent that is easily mistread because body language is missing in written forums) is daunting enough. Being a simulation gamer and witnessing fellow simmers taking cheap shots at artists and developers, not to mention each other is disparaging at times.

In my opinion, the developers did a good job with getting this add-on to us. Does anybody else think this is a simply amazing thing to play such an intricate and graphically rich WWII submarine simulator as this? The developers demonstrate much more craftmanship and artistry through their product than I think they get credit for. Sure, we pay for a product but they show a passion for their work too.

All of the bugs listed in this post seem to be fixable and I'm sure will be ironed out in short order. I would like to see the developers (UBI team) saddle up and lasso items like revamping the language spoken issue. That seems to be a long term feature that needs to be addressed. Just expecting modders to jury-rig it doesn't seem appropriate. There will probably come a point when Japanese submarines, or British, etc. will be surfacing and there needs to be both language files and interface to select which ones you want to hear.

Anyway, that's my two-cents. I hope these waves die down a bit and we see some smooth sailing ahead. This could be a huge amount of fun both now and in the future.

The tube status lights don't work correctly. Currently they always show the tubes as empty. Should be green for loaded, red for loading-in-progress, and white for empty.

I dont need an IXD2 going down in 10 seconds by using crashdive.

This addon is a hit into the modders face cause all modders have to rework their mods.
Only for those two germans subs and an small german campaign without to be able to play these german subs online, this reworked filestructure of the addon is an worst case for the modders.
TMO and all other bigmods have to be reworked if they should work with 1.5. !

Ah, dear AOTD_MadMax. We are trying to give you the benefit of the doubt here but you are not helping anything. Look, some of this is just semantics so you may want to just overlook a bit of it.

Raptor1 is trying to deploy what is known as humor. Sort of like a Bold 1 launcher that fires off good feelings instead of chemicals that make bubbles in seawater. Maybe instead of firing depth charges at him you could, say, relax.

What I might refer to as a bug is simply something that is not as it should be with the game. It doesn't necessarily have to crash the game. That would be a pretty bad bug. Yes, computer viruses can crash computers too but that doesn't necessarily have to be their function (or dis-function depending on your point of view).

One question before I buy: What sort of protection does the expansion use? My SH4 uses Securom and needs the disc in the drive. But since the expansion is sold online, is there some online verification that requires you to be online when playing? Because that's something that I could not do. Or does it need the SH4 disc? It would be nice if you could let me know.

This is for the downloaded version. Online activation is required. Also, there is now a SecuROM directory in my "Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data" which has an update date as of my last time playing. No disc needed, though. No SecuROM service installed, either. Registry has a SecuROM entry (not in services, but in software).

frame rates are a disaster in this addon. total mess now compared to 1.4

My machine is borderline for 1.4: ASUS A7N8X, Athlon XP 3000+, 7600GT, SB Live! card (ie not using on-board sound). I get in the mid-20s with 1.4 / Trigger Maru / RSRDC. No ROW, because ROW puts the framerates around 15, which is unusable. Mid-20s is usable, I know that comes as a shock to you guys who have frame rates in the 100s.

1.5 puts framerate at 14. This is on the bridge, nice weather, calm seas. It's unusable. I bet it's because of the ROW stuff added.

Hi,guys,i think this is a bug.The magnification of attack periscope should be 6*,but in the game it shows 4*,and when you switch to the exterior view,you will find the in the left on the attack periscope,there says 1.5* and 6*.

A few picky technical things -

The KDB hydrophone rotates on its side through the forward torpedo hatch :doh:
That's not how it should be!

The IXD2 shouldn't have one screw inactive when recharging. Unlike all other U-boats, it had a 2nd set of diesels which it could use to recharge batteries independent of propulsion.


The IXD2 seems seriously out of trim when underwater. The bow planes are always down and the stern planes are up (meaning it's bow-light), and the boat bobs up and down while traveling at depth. It should probably be trimmed a bit more neutrally.

And this is where the CO2 non-recharge also hit me.

I think there is some sort of confusion in the sub's surfaced/submerged state change that gets stuck.

Has anyone else noticed you can't recruit anymore officers on fleet boats? Through process of elimination ive figured out the game is limiting officer numbers to ONE.

Not an issue with 1.4, and occurs in stock 1.5. Is there a variable/file im missing somewhere, or is this a hardcoded limitation?


BTW, ive noticed alot of small sublte improvements under 1.5. Such Radar turns on automatically when surfacing, and the deck gun crew bug seems to be fixed.

It has these lines:

Maybe. That was acutally the first place i looked. I queried the gato's upc file for "officer" and got no return. I wonder if this is new functionalty/code change in 1.5 that was accounted for in the uboat.upc file, but missed in the fleetboat.upc files?

Although I did not do an actual count of officers, I attempted to add one and was advised to many officers. So, being that I did not count. How many officers are there to start? 5? Perhaps promotions after a patrol of 1 or 2 officers thus bringing your boat up to speed as it were.

I think in Uboats campaign ive come across that bug where unable to complete objectives. It states patrol for 48 hrs ive patroled for something like 100hrs and still no objective complete - ive sent messages, just get replies telling me to keep to the objectives. But ive only sunk two merchants while patroling this area maybe i need to sink more tonnage then she'll trigger:hmm: If not im heading back to base to start a new mission.

I noticed the limit starting a game on a sugar boat in dutch harbour, august 42. (SS 18)

Initial loadout was 6 Lieutenants and 4 petty officers.

My first impression was positive. It always seemed odd that I could fill a fleetboat with untold officers. Learning how flexible these limits are would be a great help.

I was unable to add more officers. Note the six officers and boat type directly correlates with....

MaxOfficers=6 ; max number of crewmembers over rank 7

Lines are in the uboats but not the fleet boats (any class)

I used winmerge to find the entry locations in the balao and uboat upc files. Copied the uboat lines over to the Balao upc under the same location. Set the numbers to a ridiculous number as I didn't know how many officers there should be.

Can now recruit officers.

These lines are missing from all Fleet Boats. Checked the 1.4 versions and the lines are not in there, so it's a new parameter for 1.5

Too bad LukeFF seems to be off line now- he has a lot of info on the correct numbers for each boat type.

Maybe Donner can help with the info.

Well, all U-boat patrol missions now are two-step - it's reach area, then sink 5000 or 7000t. Perhaps that's how all stock patrol missions work now, too?

you should still get points for reaching area though.

It's best to not patrol around the star but patrol around the assigned grid like LF49.

I think something is wrong with the medal reward screen, because I won a MOH and it says I won a MOH but the medal it displays is a purple heart. The only thing I've modded was the medal graphics and I'm using the graphics captaincox released in his All Medals mod to make the medals look like they do in real life.

In all actuality, despite providing a lot of the reports you see here, I can tell you that the game is maybe 98% good stuff. 1.5 only has a few rough spots that were introduced, but in terms of bugs-per-new-features introduced, it's probably the best new version of an SH game yet :p

Yeah, I have had 5 or 6 trouble free patrols with the grammophone filled up with soundtracks. The only annoying things are not bugs, but stock stuff that modders later made optional, like very fast clouds, very fast smoke, insane amounts of contact and planes, etc, etc. (I get that the two last ones are meant for the more casual players of todays shooter-generation)

I also like that fact that my uboat get access to the more excotic areas of Japan without getting shot to pieces.

Now that is cool. I did not think about that when I just took a quick peek a the uboats. I'm guessing someone with a very active imagination could make a great sim with the uboats in the PTO.

It doesn't use menu_1024x768.ini. The only things I've replaced is Data\Textures\TNormal\tex\badges.dds, Data\Menu\Data\AwardsItems_1.dds, and
Data\Menu\Data\AwardsItems_2.dds. But even in the stock game (without any modding) the medals are still screwed up.

Any previous medal fixes from 1.4 or earlier are no longer valid. Particuarlly if you plan on using the uboat game, as the KM crew ranks and such have been put into the same files as US navy ranks.

I had SH4 running well on my computer. After I uninstalled and reinstalled patched to 1.4 put the new U-boat addon on, I get constant crashes. I have a 4600 + AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual core, 2 gigs memory, 8800 GTX with 169.25 drivers, Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium. I would appreciate any help.

I found out, that many fps-issues can be solved, by simply pausing the game, the hit Alt+Tab, stay at desktop for a few secs, and then maximize SH4 again....issue solved.
I also managed to fix the "missing eyes" thing this way.

Today I just decided to download and install the latest drivers (8.3) for my ATI x1950 PRO AGP, as I was still using the old 7.6 drivers.
Never had this problem before.
Will try to go back to 7.6........

This new parameter works for both the American submarines and the U-boats. Essentially what it means is you can now set crew member limits for junior petty officers (rank level 4-6) and CPOs/Officers (Rank level 7 and above). Nice little feature that will come in handy for future modding work.

Look in /Data/Submarine and then navigate to the submarine type you want to edit (such as NSS_Balao). Open up NSS_Balao.upc and copy in this text below MenuSilhouetteTextureName (for the American subs - the German ones already have this feature):

MaxPettyOfficers=32 ; max number of crewmembers over rank 4
MaxOfficers=6 ; max number of crewmembers over rank 7

PettyOfficers refers to the ranks of Petty Officer Third, Second and First Class.
Officers refers to all ranks of Chief Petty Officer and above.

You'll need to edit these numbers for it to work right with the American boats, as those values are for the U-boats.

Forgive me for not reading 7 pages; but I think the 1.5 patch/add-on broke Anti-aliasing.

If I remember correctly, one of the previous patches allowed AA to work.

Now, it seems to be gone again. Look at this pic.

This is at 1680x1050, and it's at 6X AA, with Temporal AA turned on as well.

It should not look like this....

Nope. Not in my SH4 data/submarine/.... u-boat folders. Looked very carefully at each file extension and none are *.upc files. They are in the American sub folders but I simply can't find any in the U-boat folders. Is this not supposed to happen?

In submarine folders there should be NSS_Uboat_9d2.upcge and NSS_Uboat_18.upcge and in data folder there should be folder called UPCDataGE.

Some things that have not been mentioned yet and are not bugs but have put an additional load on the processors is the gridwork that follows the mouse when you are in map mode and plotting and running the course.

This part of the game is much slower than stock 1.4 because of the grid and also an increase in Japanese convoys. Trying to go at 8192 speed is impossible. It takes longer to get your U-boat to station.

Oh, yes, what is that extra icon that is assigned to special something. And how do you call in air support that the message center says you can do now ?

Isn't this fun.....

The extra icon is available when you have officers with spesial abilities. Air support can be called for by clicking on the airfields on the map.

I'm not sure if this falls under the whole crew on deck underwater 'bug', but it seems that my crew are loading our reserve external torpedoes whilst submerged also. Apologies if this has been noted earlier.

Haven't extensively tested it but it may only be in cases where the loading was initially started on the surface, then carried on after submerging for a pesky search plane as this was the case when I noticed it. The loading was going on still ten minutes later at 60m.

I own SH4, and have it installed on my computer in Program/Games/SH4. Apparently, the automatic install for the UBoat missions doesn't recognize this, and aborts the installation. The install program doesn't give the option of manually directing the program to the correct program game path. If anyone has any suggestions on how to correct this, I would appreciate it. I've already fired off an email to ubisoft, but given its the weekend, I won't hear back until Monday:cry:

Don't know why the devs coded it like this, but...

...the highest officer rank the crew can achieve is Leutnant zur See. This is obviously incorrect, as many an officer below the CO on U-boats held the rank of Oberleutnant zur See. It can be modded to allow crewmen to be promoted to Oberleutnant, but then the crew portrait is that of the Seaman ranks, and there is no rank insginia present for the rank.

Couple of issues with the interiors:

In both the XVIII and the IXD2, the clock in the sonar room does not work, nor does it make a ticking sound.
Clock in the radio room does not make a ticking sound.

I have an ATI x1950 pro with 512 RAM and I have no problems with AA in the expansion, but I'm using the 7.6 drivers, not the last 8.3.
To be sure, launch the game, pause it, then go back to desktop with alt-tab.
Now, with the game still running in background, launch the CCC and then close it.
Go back to game.
I had the same issue (AA seemed not working) but then I solved the problem following the above procedure.
A second solution is to create, from CCC, a profile for SHIV.

I think it's just cause we're so used to the modded SH3/4 now :D

I don't think it's so much a bug, just the way the game was originally designed. But modders should be near!

I did have similar thoughts cross my mind when after 3 patrols with almost 100,000t (and I play using rather realistic procedures instead of exploiting every trick in the book) on a IXD2 in 1943, I went and started a career with an American sub using a modded Trigger Maru + RSRDC with "hardcore" torpedoes and got 12,000t in the same 3 patrols :88)

There seem to be an awful lot of random ship collisions and ships miraculously spawning up mountains/ashore than I remember from before I started to play modded - that may just be me though. I pretty much jumped straight into a TM+RSRD setup a day or two after buying the stock game.

Nope, I first noticed them at the start of a new patrol steaming North out of Surubaya in the German campaign. Thought it wierd seeing smoke littering the horizon at the start of the patrol and saw five separate ships aground. I can only hypothesise that they were scripted in some way to spawn there at the start of the mission rather than in the water.

NSM isn't compatible at the moment with 1.5 I don't believe. Equally It deals with the ins and outs, zones and the like of Japanese shipping which I doubt you're shooting torps at in your U-boat. I'm no expert but it could well be causing your crashes as it tries to load. Well worth dropping out of your setup for the time being (as much as it hurts to not play with such an essential piece of kit. :up: To Werner Sobe.

So far the game is ok, but I found this weird bug:
I started in 43 from Surabaya and first of all noticed that the orders that you recieve are not translated correctly.
Then when you leave the harbor there are some destroyed ships:

Major problems with my U Boat dvd install. Never had problems previously, but 1.5 is now jerky as hell. Eyes missing. Ships on land and crew on bridge under water. Poor really. Going back to 1.4 and RFB.:damn:

A serious flaw in my opinion. What do find? And the crew members' voices were horrible in English, they could have put the option of voices in German, to be more realistic.

I think that this is an old bug, but I noticed Japanese crewmen and civilians on board a Liberty Ship that I sunk south of the Phillippines. The Jap sailors were manning the bow deck gun. I should have taken a screenie, but I didn't.

Also, I've been playing on "very hard" with 90%+ realism (I like my camera views) and the planes are waaaaay too easy to shoot down. Looking forward to installing the supermods for 1.5.

I was happy to see that my first 4 German fish that I fired hit their targets at several thousand yards (I forgot to switch to Metric). I'm happy to see that I never lost my German TDC groove. :arrgh!:

Bugs that I observed....

- Delay in the in almost all of the orders... and warnings...
- One of the crew members that they are in the tower, is transparent" (the one on the left side), of the to see through him!
- I already dove with the crew members in the machine guns and cannon, unassuming in the "vigil submerged!"
- I went to the bottom because the crew members didn't repair a single damage... same existing all of the conditions for that....

They make a beautiful expansion exactly to see if it saves the game, putting U-boats but they leave everything as the Americans: the sirens... "COMSUPAC" or opposite of BDU.... (nor they changed the form of sending of messages!), they left the sounds in English.... and "the same voices of the Americans"... it was horrible!!!

I'm new to SH4, used to play Silent Hunter Commander Edition (kind of a special release of SH1) a lot. I still keep the whole package.

Decided to come back to the game, I've bought SH4+U-Boat Add on and installed it. I've downloaded Captain Midnights CBS NEWS Sound Mod, BBC_World sound mod and GreenLamp1.5 mod. I've decided on practicing a while before downloading SH4-ver15_TMO and RSRDC_V310_for_V15.

1. Game related question: when submerged and taking damage on the deck gun, why is the deck gun crew injured? I'm submerged, they are not suppose to be on deck?

2. Game crash: I've played the tutorial and the first two Patrol missions, difficulty level - 50. I keep getting game crashes at least one per mission, some times more.

3. Sound from radio problem: while playing the radio, now and then one of the added radio stations plays in a very fast pitch or very slow but not the original station (washington).

Are any of the mentioned above problems related to the mods or are the mods verified as problems free?

Last but not least,(not a bug) What happened to the calendar with sunrise and sunset times, and is there an option for weather reports ? an add on maybe?

I followed most of the advices found on the forum, i.e latest drivers for my Radeon X800 and the onboard sound. clean install of XP pro, the CPU is P4 3G, M/B is Abit and I've installed 2GB of RAM.

The only programs loaded besides hardware drivers are
the HP PSC drivers and ZoneAlarm security suite.

Have I missed something or is it normal game behaviour?

I had the orange arrowcircle locator both in the water and overhead in the sky. I saved the game in the open ocean and away from anytihng. When I reloaded the msn it was corrupt. It started out okay then 2 minutes into it the first officer starts repeating torpedo in the water over and over again till it stops responding and crashes. One thing of note is that I was playing Company of Heroes prior too playing SHIV1.5. Now I reboot the machine first and no problems.

Another small thing I found - the engine sound positioning is backwards when in the interior of the boat. The sounds are coming from the fore of the boat when the engines are aft of the command room. The bow wake sound, conversely, is coming from the aft.
I had also noticed this, and it really bugs me.

I've only read the first 2 or 3 pages of this thread so forgive me if it's been said allready, but when I look forward from the bridge the water near the front of the boat seems to vibrate. I get decent framerates and everything else looks fine, it's just that water right there at the front. If I look left or right, the water there seems fine.

Also, I get the crewmen staying on deck while submerged. I haven't tested it, but at the time I thought it was because I submerged while at battlestations.

(EDIT) I just noticed that the conning tower in the Uboat doesn't do night lighting with the rest of the ship....

- Light flaks on IX completely useless due to false / bad positioned crosshairs, i.d. the guns shoot at the middle of the screen, but the crosshairs are not centered. This also means that the AI never hits with these guns. 37mm flaks work alright, 20mm quad seems broken aswell.

This bug is driving me crazy, as I can only use the 37mm flak..trying to aim with the two others light flak guns is almost impossibile.
Is there a quick fix for this?

Giving the devil his due, see how SH4 is looking in about 12 months. See how the PTO part of SH4 is looking now in just under year. It is very good with the likes of TMO/RFB/ROW/RSRD and others. The add-on has been out for 4 weeks. It will take time to get it up to snuff. Until then, perhaps some help getting there is in order. What can you do to make it better?

-The camera angle on some of the German AA guns is indeed off, resulting in the rounds not going where the gun is pointed.

-More of a design decision than a bug, but it really looks silly seeing American radar scopes in German submarines.

The German awards are not set up properly. Players can earn the Knight's Cross before the other medals, and in at least one case a player has reported earning the U-boat Front Clasp more than once.

Hi, there is a german "language patch".
So your crew will talk german. Sadly the americans will talk german, too.
But I heard of a modification wich gives you the chance to enable this language pack via JSGME like a normal mod.

May be I'll search for it later on.

I have been playing sub sims since the first Silent Service by Microprose. I don't need you to tell me what to do or what I should look for. I have purchased (thats purchased) every sub game on the day of their release since the mid 80's.:nope: I know all about the great work the modders do, and I am eternally grateful. But I tell the truth here, the U-Boat addon is rubbish straight out of the box. Thats all I'm saying. Trying to belittle me bacause you have some sort of self importance as a long standing member, won't wash with me. I have been a member of Combatsim, and various others like frugals since they started. I don't have time to mod or post on here because I am a serving member of the UK Armed Forces.:damn: :up:

After 6 day of playing and testing addon U-boota, I can tell that it is a crap :(.
- A lots of sound bug, like jamming sounds, hydrophone sometimes dont hear a sounds, ( i was 2 times sunked by a ship which i don hear), Sound in UbootIXd2 is buged, engine in front, water sound beck, enemy destroyer come from right i hear him from left side.
Some sounds sometimes aren't played. like when you dive, or go down to periscope deeph.
- a lots of missing textures for, ships, guns on ships, or planes.
- missing textures from gauges in U-boot.
- Some ships don't have engine sounds.
- german ships are not really a german but english or japs, like destroyer or schnellboot
- In u-boot addon we have a 3 sailors on tower, really was 4.
- reloading external torpedoes underwater :)
- crosshair in 20mm AAguns id in wrong position.
- Only IXD2 uboot like there was no IXB, IXC. No milk cows.
- Flaying ships in storm weather.
- Convoys are almost the same, same ships, same numbers of ships, go almost the same path, and without escort. It's like shooting to ducks.
- stupid warning icons.
- Ubi add something like Battles on see. We can call for a support and we can see battles TF vs TF or Ships Vvs ships, but they don't create any AI scripts for that. Ship just go straight.
- and a lot of other stupid bugs.

In my opinion Ubi do this addon because ppl dont bay a SH4. a lot of ppl still play SH3. Why? because ppl (we) prefer a U-boots, and we got a supermods. They (ubi) try to do something and thay do a crap. Game which is boring, for me its more like shooter not a simulation. We will have to wait for rally good mods like GWX, WAC or NYGM for SH4, without supermods this game will be only a boring shooter.

I rally glade that i have a SH3 with GWX2.0, and OLC staff. Thx GWX team and onelifecrisis for a rally good staff.
SO starting a SH3 and take orders for a new patrol . GRID AM18. :)

I'm having many problems.

1. The game CTDs randomly and often, I havent even been able to fire a single torp since getting the add on.

2. Sub gets "stuck" in ports. The engines just wont work.

3. HUGE drop in fps and there isnt anyone thats gonna convince me its cause I dont have the specs. This computer is MORE then a match for this games requirments.

As a side I'm also getting the no eyes thing and see through crew but I can live with that.

Sorry guys, my upgrade is working fine. The new interface is really great. There are actually Warships in the harbors and docks now along with T3 Tankers.

I'm a happy camper......

I bought the U-Boat Missions and I like it so far. I can't believe the major errors in this. The majority have been mentioned. Here's what I've seen wrong.

1.) When you choose a depth, it's about 2 or 3 meters short then what you picked.
2.) My fuel tank levels don't decrease when on patrol.
3.) FuMO-30 radar doesn't retract when submerged. You can see it under water.
4.) I get the creepy missing eyeballs (conning crew) and during certain weather conditions, they're see through.
5.) Everyone speaks English! How could they get that wrong?:doh:
6.) Same with COMSUBPAC sending me messages!:doh:
7.) The KDB hydrophone is in the wrong place, it rotates through the hatch. It should be about a meter forward away from the hatch. I also get the hydrophone contacts while on the surface.

Lets see what else is wrong.

Hi, Due to see an ugly ball in the sky of SH4, I have decided to upgrade my graphic card from ATI X1900XT to a NVIDIA 8800GT...

So I decided to use the nvidia control panel and disable some settings by chance. I succed to see a beautiful sun when I have put the AA setting on "let the application choose" but unfortunatly I loose the AA effect... I let you see:

Is there any setting wich allow me to have the both effects on, with my graphic card?... At least It seems AA doesn't works (again) with 1.5 version.

Another "bug" wich appear again since 1.5: I can see white lines around the sub or the ship at the limit between water and hull. This ugly things disapear when I switch off the setting "realistic waves" or "3D wake" (or something like that... sorry for translation!) It is a shame cause this trouble disapear with 1.4 patch.

Thanks for your reply Syxx, I have tried to disable gamma correction in nvidia control panel and sun glare works even if I choose "Improve application parameter" :) but then there is no AA in game. :damn: If I choose "replace application parameter", sun glare disapear again... but AA is on.

Does the both effects works for you? :o If it works, could you give me what is your settings on nvidia control panel ? and what is your driver version please? I have got the last (169.21). :cry:

Thanks Syxx, it is very strange, I have tried your settings, came back to game and sun halo first appear but disapear after 2 seconds.... :damn:

I have found a topic ( http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=830818&posted=1#post830818 ) wich give a good setting to have the both settings activated and it works but only with AA multisampling 4x maxi. Gamma correction can be use too :88)

It is a good setting, so I will use this one to play. There are 2 other little things I would like to solve and it will be ok! (see link)

mmk, I think I read the whole thread and didn't see a post about my problem--the SO calls out a contact, and when I go to that bearing on the instrument, there is nothing there--no sound, no text "Merchant" or "Warship" in the upper right text. Anyone else see this?

That's interesting--I'll give that try as well.

I'm not sure if it's the same as you, but in a test mission with 2 ships at different bearings sailing at 5 knots, my SO called contacts but I could hear anything, not even a faint noise. edit : no ship label either, and the green light on the hydro station didn't pop up.
With the exact same mission setting but the ships sailing at 10 knots I could hear them perfectly :hmm:

This is a new one to 1.5 and is not affected by any mods:

When at the PPI screen, watch the scope as it passes bearing 000 - the scope will "jump" to about bearing 005-007.

Don't know if it's been mentioned or not, but the hydrophone on the u-boats has 361 degrees. It goes 358, 359, 360, 000, 001....etc...

I seem to recall this being true in SH3 as well.

Fun fact you should know: If you have a "Proceed to grid co-ordinate blah-blah and sink shipping at your discretion - 5000 tons would be a nice start" mission, you don't have to be anywhere near that grid coordinate to meet your quota.

My coordinate location was off the tip of Madagascar. After spending ten days patrolling and only getting a pair of fishing boats, I headed for the Gulf of Aden. Found and bagged a 4-ship unescorted convoy and lo and behold, got the mission complete check-mark - 2000 km from my intended patrol location.

Not sure if that constitutes a bug and I'm pretty sure I don't want it fixed. ;)

That has happened to me a number of times. I think the area is greater than 100 nautical miles in that case. I vote with you that it may not be a bug but designed in on purpose.

That's not quite it. It would still need to go from 359 to either 360 OR 000. Not both. When you turn the hydrophones around, it goes from 358 to 359 to 360 to 000 to 001....etc, that's 361 degrees. Rounding has nothing to do with it.

It's very easy to add that extra number to an array when you are programming.

first bug I've noticed since getting the addon..playing a american career in 1942...salmon class sub. Surfaced in mild weather, crew will not man the deck gun, but I can operate it manually. I order and reorder them to fire and get audible acknowledgement but no execution. Anyone else run into this? Do I have to do everything myself??

one other thing, right before this patrol I got a bow mounted gun to replace the stern mounted one. In the crew management screen in mission, there is no Deck gun compartment to put people in...is this normal?

Done a self workaround, copy and past all your german speeky GWX folder, them loaded it with jsgme. Ok crew speaking right now.

But im registering my insatisfaction, that simple things need come with a stock adon of a Subsim for some basic imersion. Things like that are basics and must have in any stock adon.

2) All my screw above deck are translucent.

3) Sometimes, when i destroy or attack a vessel/airplane... i get the lovely blue screen of death... if i update my graphics card driver to a beta... i dont get it anymore... instead i get a black screen of nothing and then a complete system freeze.

4) When diving... all my men on deck stay on deck... looks like they are praticing there yoga breathing excersises.

5) Is there someway of getting german sounds/voices?

6) Is there a way of getting better effects?

1) Classic bug, caused by vista drivers. Serch around these forums for zombie crew. No fix AFAIK, unless downgrading your system to the good ol' reliable XP.

2) Bug caused by volumetric fog. Turn it off and crewmen become once again opaque, but you'll lose all those nice fog effects.

3) Never heard about, never experienced it. Might be caused by some extra mods you've put in your game. Looks like some incompatibility between mods IMO.

4) Classic bug again. And random as well. Sometimes you'll have it, sometimes not. No fix AFAIK.

Where might I find that? That has been my biggest gripe with the add-on. If I could have English and German simultaneously it would be great! However, does the patch overwrite the English SH4 sounds like the alarms, battle stations and stuff?

Not only, it's a wrong implementation of the CloudShadows effect through the environment shader. You must switch off the environment filter for no transparent deck crew but without the environment filter, the volumetric fog filter does not work in the way it was meant.:nope:

Same here. The patch never worked for me, which leaves us with the reliable alternative made by Spax. I don't know what version of the game the patch was made for. Maybe there's some people here that got it functional and they will shed some light about it.

I just bought the UBM and i feel very disapponted.(fortunatelly has got only 15 Euro).
I am using a vista x64. and now I am thinking very seriously to intall a second operationg system (xp 32bit) just only for SH3. I want also to play GW2.0 I have never play sh3 with the mod GW, and as far as I undrestood from this forum, it must be very good.
what do you think? should I install xp 32bit for GW2.0? I think that i will not regret it

It seems alot of people with vista are having problems, I would try SH4 on XP, submarine1981. (And SH3 + GWX of course)

PS: Yes, angry-vista-mob-ready-to-attack, I know lots of people are playing SH4 on Vista without issues. :lol:

Yesterday, before my SH decided to take a bungee jump without the rope, i found out rather strange bug.. or could i even call it a glitch.

It's related to the specialised crew members (engineers, radar etc), On my 5th patrol in my Graf spee, i noticed there was a engine specialist for me to be recruited, of course i take him aboard instantly (sascha.H.something) was the name i guess, i send out to the sea right away after i notice that i forgot to promote my crew members.

I reload the autosave, and guess what. Sascha is at the recuirtable crew list AND aboard my ship. And i still have same amount of renown BEFORE i recruited him.. I ended up confirming this 3 times by restarting the game and doing the same. Now i got a graf spee crew with 10 clone engine specialists :doh:

I hardly think the devs are interested in bugs that relate to mods, especially when it involves a playable surface ship. This type of bug report belongs in the mods forum, not here.

Tested it now with standard u-boat campaing, unmodded. I still encountered same glitch, this time when i started from Penang in the type IXB and took onboard the Gunnery officer. Left out the harbor and reloaded the autosave. Again there was the gunnery officer in the recruit list, renown was 7500 as it was before i left (didnt take any modifications on the sub)

So there is a glitch wich determines what crew is avaiable at what date. And autosaves can somehow bring over the same crew ID that you have onboard.

I was still able to finish my patrol with 4 gunnery officers onboard.. ehheh.

Or then there is something wrong with my own game... Dont know.
