View Full Version : High CPU-usage

Hello community :)

I have been playing Dangerous Waters since end of 2005 now and stumbled across some technical "issues" which you might be able helping me to resolve.

Normally I am playing the sim in a 1024x768 resultion in fullscreen-mode with most of the details turned on.

But, no matter what I do, the CPU-usage in the windows task manager always shows 100%. Is that considered being normal or is my computer just too aged? There are no major graphical "hickups", but for example the P3-Orion seems to "stutter" a bit across the monitor.

My computer:

AMD 2600+ (from 2003)
1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9500 128 MB graphics card

Before I start playing, I end all applications, such as anti-virus software and all other running processes which are not needed. It shows 147 MB (out of 1024 MB) used before I start the game and when the game is running, it gets up to 285 MB RAM used. The harddisk is being defragmented on a regular basis and a virus-scan showed no results.

Is DW using up that much of CPU-power by default? What could I do to decrease it or make things run "smoother"?

Another question I have is, how much processing power additional units in the game use up. For example: in a scenario I have put 5 different ships and some buildings (no included in sim, just for optical reasons)

I would be grateful for every help you could provide me.

Many thanks in advance and cheers from Germany,

Frostie

I guess it's ok. Mine does that too.

Most 3D games takes 100%. They just render as fast as they can. They can only wait for vertical sync. But DW seems to use more threads and it takes 100% even with forced vertical sync wait.

I have the same setup you have actually and I have no problem whatsoever with DW. It doesn't suck up my processor at all. As a matter of face, I have two monitors and I've played DW on one while running Harpoon Advanced Naval Warfare on the seccond one at the same time with no lag or hiccups (unless the Harpoon scenario has 100's of units in it.. then it will cause both DW and itself to crash to desktop) but if I run smaller scenarios, it's all fine.

Hm .. today I tried /wantvsync flag for DW and now my CPU usege is about 50%, less if I turn the shadows off.
