View Full Version : Annoying User Avatars

Love the forums here. My only criticism is the constantly changing user avatars.

I prefer forums where you have the option to change that in the CP (I'm not missing something am I?)

The avatars allow the users to exist with a little more personality, you get use to seeing certain people's avatars and you can spot your friends commentaries easily. Here it's just kind of an annoying conglomeration of random photos...

Has there ever been any discussion of changing the avatar system to allow folks to load their own? I would see that as an improvement!

...and the "Navy Dude" avatar really scares me. Isn't that the biker guy from the Village People?

Actually I like this option here at subsim :yep:

If you want to keep a certain avatar, or make a new one, contact the admin folks here, make a small donation and you will have your own personalized avatar.

The problem is if you have to pay for the service... no one uses it. So there's no community benefit.

...and probably not fair to call it an option. Perhaps feature.

Yeah, it is more of a feature :yep:

To be honest though, with many members here at subsim ( not sure of the total, it grows daily ), keeping track of all of the personal avatars would be a chore.

No, you don't host em... you just allow folks to enter a URL.
It's no more of a chore than what you allow for signatures.

And sure, you can keep what you've got going now as the default.

Do you happen to know?

When my avatar hits "Navy Dude" how many times will I have to bump this thread to change it?

there are 2 you can get for free

the Keelhauled and the Brig avatar

the only thing you have to do is ....

make Neal very very angry ;)

the downside is...you cant post anymore

Since the precedent has been set requiring that people pay for custom avatars...

I can see where it would be difficult to change from that practice without possibly upsetting folks who already paid for the priviledge.

Question then... If I send in a donation, do you enable the user CP feature that would allow me to enter the URL for my avatar or do you just make those adjustments manually? ...or could I host the avatar file and give you the URL to link to? That way I could change it if/when I needed to.

Not only that but you want to take away Neal's secret weapon (The dreaded "Wild Night in Bankok" avatar)?

Horrors!

Now that I have graduated from "Sparky" to "Bonnet Boy" (and anxiously awaiting "Navy Dude") I am starting to develop an appreciation for the comical nature of the avatars.

I wonder if I can lobby for the inclusion of the following great sailor pic...

Since minorities seem to be lacking representation, I'm thinkin this would be a good addition. :yep:

Actually a lot of us use it. Well, Dowly and me, anyway.:rotfl:

Well, there is one other option: remember during the Drebbel Trial when Neal specifically said that there was one thread dedicated to the trial itself, and anyone who posted there got the 'Brig' avatar? Adam Warren and America Person posted there on purpose, and instead of the 'Brig' Neal gave them that cute little 'Sailor Dan' avatar. I earlier suggested that Sir Big Jugs be awarded that one, but maybe aaronblood could have it for free.

He might like it.
