hi there all.. i'm into DW for not more than 1 week and have still much to read from the manuel.. however some help on certain points will be highly appreciated since it might save me from a lot of reading.. (and sorry in advance for the non native english, hope i can put these out correctly)

1) i don't know much about modern sensors but i always tought that if you hear someone pinging you with active sonar then you must be dedected.. however in DW you can get pinnged for an hour without being dedected.. still, keeping this in mind if i ping any target it pretty quikly reacts.. is the matter here being "identified" instead of being dedected ? can anyone tell please?

2) Is there any way to avoid being pinged other than going under the layer.. some missions start with no layer at all and having the pings right from the start of the mission

3) Other things i still have to figure out than the above asked ones are the FFG itself (which can wait) and the TMA alltogether. Any quick advise on the TMA or any link someone can offer would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance all

1) if you hear the ping it does not mean you are detected yet. You are detected when pinger hears the return. And the return is very weak for modern subs. I've read somewhere that you can hear the pings at distance five times larger then detection range. I don't know exact numbers for DW.

2) There are 2 other things which affect active sonar detection (above layer) .. distance, and aspect. If you face the pinger you will give much less are to reflect the sound. Your tail section should reflect even less, but I'm not sure how well this is implemented. Do some test missions in mission editor and see for yourself.

Sure you can .. there is at least 5 really skilled people reading this board every day, and me too :|\\

I'd give you some link to TMA but honestly I don't know any, on the other hand I've seen such link here many times, so maybe try search tool or just browse the topics.

Is the return modeled in DW? I've never heard it, I think.

Doesn't being very close to the bottom and stopped also help reduce active detection? I swear it does (at least for me), seeing how I had a pinging ship drive right over me when I was stopped on the bottom (at about 60-65 meters) that never "saw" me. Was that effect even modeled in DW, or was it by pure luck?

Off of Subguru ( www.subguru.com (http://www.subguru.com) ):

http://www.subguru.com/DW_missions/TMA_an_Accurate_Solution.zip "TMA-an accurate solution

http://www.subguru.com/DW_missions/FFG_Guide.pdf "MaHuJa's Tatics Guide for the FFG-7"

Go to the "Downloads" section on Subguru.com and you will find even more.

Also, the CADC website ( http://www.commanders-academy.com/ ) has some good
tips and tricks, specifically these:

Good luck with your DW experience! And don't hesitate to ask any more questions, we (more specifically "they") are always here.

Further on, there is a Wiki available at the CADC ( http://www.commanders-academy.com/wiki/index.php?title=Dangerous_Waters_-_Wiki ) which is still in its infancy, but hopefully will be filled with a lot more information soon. Next to other things you will find the actual FFG Guide by MaHuJa there. More content will be added over the time.

Is the return modeled in DW? I've never heard it, I think. the return is modeled for the active sonar station on the ship sending the transmittion, both visually and in audio. The return is not modeled for 3rd party listeners.

Was that effect even modeled in DW, or was it by pure luck? I'm 95% sure DW does NOT model any interference caused by proximity to the bottom. More likely than not, you escaped detection b/c the ship was going too fast to listen.

Some promotion vid by SCS describes a situation of "playing a rock":

still i cant say if its really modeled.

What ASWnut101 describes happened to my on my first ever attempt of playing 688i back in 98 in the training mission where you need to ne very stealthy in order to pass 2 destroyers, back then i related it to a bad AI (if i remember right,688i's AI and missions had a very scripty nature).

Wow this post really doesnt contribute to the debate...
