I recently purchsed DW for my laptop and am starting to get my grips around the sim. 580 pages is a lot of information. Is there a recommended platform to focus on and then a logical path to head down towards mastering the platforms. My initial thoughts would be that the PC-3 might be one of the easier ones, but I was looking to get some input.

The Helo seems a good place to start for some. It's easier than the P-3 because you can get it to hover. The P-3 is continually on the move and alot faster. You can cover more area with the P-3, and do it faster, but the Helo is a slower, more controlled type of ASW from the air. Plus the helo has the fewest stations to learn. I would start there, then learn one of the subs after that. Anyone will do. Learn the FFG-7 last. It is the most complex and busy platform you get.

I'd start with the KILO because it's mostly just periscope/radar/ESM. You don't have to do a lot of formal TMA in the KILO, just good guesswork and estimating. The sonar is so weak that if you can see something else on sonar just shoot a torpedo in that direction and it stands a pretty good chance of hitting. It also doesn't go deep enough that you have to think a lot about sound propagation and "fine tuning" your sensor depth.

Yep Kilo. I second that well actually third....

Then move on to other subs.

Well which one is easier depends a lot on your favorite platform. Some like subs better some like helo some other like the Orion(P3C) some like the tin cans(OHP).

I suggest to start with the one you're most interested with.......i hope it's not the OHP because it's a very demanding platform. But once you've mastered it, you're suitable candidate for a Phd degree. This is no joke

What type of missions are best to practice on when starting out?

Whatever .. quick mission on easy are quite easy indeed. If you are unsure about some sensor or weapon, make your own mission in mission editor and practice. You can create missions with good weather, allies only, use civilian traffic as targets, many things.

I started with stand-alone missions. Those with 1 star are supposed to be easier.

Don't start with the campaign, as some missions are little tricky. They require more thinking and less shooting. In some conditions they also can be finished, and you must be quite experienced to realize it.
