View Full Version : Wish there was a way to pay more for this title...

...specifically, enough to make further commercial development practical.

It's not without precedent. Consider Steel Beasts Pro: Personal Edition for $125 (http://www.esimgames.com/purchase.htm).

That's the case of a developer realizing they are creating a product aimed at a specific niche of an already-niche-market. I think DW has evolved to the point where it is in a similar market position. There are few people left who are willing to buy such a game...but I'd be willing to bet this smaller group is willing to pay much more for it than the latest version of the 'Halo' series (!! $60 !! (http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=200240)).

Let's pretend that such a price would be enough to see a few (very few) extra features added. Say...

* Vastly improved and updated sensor and weapons modelling (there are some mods to improve the controllability of the torpedoes...but so much more could be done in-game!)
* A few more OPFOR platforms (maybe surface frigate like Krivak, or a few more diesels, like Type 212 U-boats)
* Better graphics (let's face it, most modern littoral operations will still make heavy use of the periscope, so even Silent Hunter 3-level graphics would be nice! Presume 32-bit color, so actual working FSAA and such.)
* More dynamic campaign structure

What say this group? If such improvements were possible - we are talking a 'professional'-sim level of polish - would you be willing to pay MUCH more for a game? Purely hypothetical, of course, but vote based on that...

I went with the "Steel Beasts" option, but in choosing that, understand that I have much higher expectations for the product than what SCS released in 2004, or even the product as patched to 1.04. I would agree that a stable sim, rounded out with appropriate counterpart platforms on both sides, with an accurate acoustics environment and accurate physics modeling, an up-to-date database, a dynamic campaign engine, and improved multiplayer architecture, is worth over $100. Possibly quite a bit more.

I voted the SBP option, with the same reasoning as ML.

It better be damn good for $125.

I think we can presume that.

My best guess, given that SB:Pro seemed to 'make it work' is that 688i/SC/DW/et al cut corners to make the commercial price point. If they didn't HAVE to hit that...wonder what would be possible?
