A question for all your SCS veterans out there: I just got NAVAL COMBAT PACK and I also have DANGEROUS WATERS. My question is: is there any advantage to learning 688[i] before learning SUB COMMAND?

Not so much. The 688(i) in DW is basicly the same boat as the one in 688(i) HK.

I will say this much though.... 688I has great training missions included, which IIRC have corresponding chapters in the manual. If you find yourself confused on how to perform basic tasks on the subs in DW, 688I might make a good training fallback.

One difference to be aware of is in DW, NB is your primary sonar for detction but in 688I the BB is.

Just interested: why is NB the primary sensor with DW and not BB (since the previous games, SC and 688, taught in the tutorials to use BB, then NB)?

You can generally see farther with narrowband.

NB is better in filtering noise. It uses Fourier transformation to isolate individual frequencies from the signal. Noise has all frequencies uniformly distributed among its spectrum, you see no lines. Artificial sounds usually just stick out.

Broadband can use only one technique to filter noise - time averaging. I guess DW is more or less correct .. long time average on BB can sometimes see the contact even if it can't be seen on NB, but only with the delay. I think it's correct since systems has it's use like this.

Some sounds (noises in general) also are not good for NB, since they do not have any concrete frequencies. In DW such contacts are biologic (which is wrong, whale's singing should produce great NB graphs), and helos (which is more or less correct, AFAIK). You can see these on BB but you won't see any lines on NB.

Its manual may not state this but in sub-command the NB is the main sensor for detecting subs (contrary to 688). Take a look at TimmyG00's TACMAN:

you can hear helos from the sub...?

Actually, BB was even more useless in SC than it is in DW. If the SC tutorials taught you to go to BB first, they were really screwing you.

Not sure how now, but at some version (both stock and LWAMI) it was possible. You neede calm sea, and the helo had to be like 50 meteres away. So it was not any usefull. It still was possible.
