Hello all!

I assume there is certain areas used by the USN as an exercise areas in the Eastern coast. Any info availible? I'm planning to build up some missions for DW and I would like to get them placed more than less correct.

Is there any "typical" tactical exercise type for a USN attack boat? (I mean a small scale exercise.)

For Atlantic training areas, see this:

and the links on the above page.

Sort of.. As part of the normal work-ups before deployment, most warships go through a series of exercises for the sake of everyone's training at least some of those will include some ASW training. There isn't really a single scenario, though. It depends on what else is also out there at the same time and what else is going on.

Since ships usually deploy as part of a strike group, a sort of small-ish to medium scale exercise might be the SSN is assigned to attack a high value unit like a CVN especially but maybe an LHD or combat logistics ship, while escorts (usually the other ships in the carrier strike group or expeditionary strike group plus P-3s), will try to defend it. Another thing they might do is divvy up an area between an SSN and maybe a P-3 or a DDG or two and have them try to find some other SSNs or maybe even an SSK from an allied nation.

Usually these sorts of exercises last a few days, maybe a week.

I know they also have the capability to simulate scenarios on board too. So they might tell their computer to simulate an attack against them and then behave as if it was real.

Thanks alot, Bill and SeaQueen!

Bill, the links you send are great! That I didn't even try to find them myself... BTW, I have started your Red Storm Rising -campaigne and I like it alot. (Read "the book" just after it was released, years ago. I was just a kid then...)

To SeaQueen: You confirmed my thoughts about the time frame for the small scale exercises, thanks!
