When is a robust seach facility going to be available for the archives?i have asked neal this before but it still has not been done.I try and provide helpful answers in the SC forum but telling a newbie to wade through pages and pages is becoming increasingly unacceptable:nope:

So which search failed ? Give me an example please.

Please also note my reply in thread:

In case you are referring to the phpbb archives I can tell you that the original phpbb searchengine is not real good and puts a real strain on the server, that is why it is disabled in the phpbb archives. So I think you will never see a real good searchengine for the SubSim archives. Unless some one will be paying Neal for all the additional costs.

PS: I do not think Neal will respond to yelling and blue faces ;)

Drebbel ,your almost incomprehensible post astounds me.You have obviously not taken the time to look at other threads about this started by me.
The archives are next to useless unless you have a decent search facility. They are arranged at the moment by date of posting-even changing this to an alphabetical listing would be better than the current format.
I have just noticed that your post is an exact copy of another on a similar topic!Perhaps you should have read it before pasting it here.

Drebbel,I am referring to the large amount of material relating to Subcommand held in the archives. There are hundreds of pages of it.When a new player asks a question about Sc I believe that this forum is doing them a dis-service by telling them to wade through the archives looking for an answer without giving the smallest hint about where to look.
It is like having a library but no card index apart from a record of when the last book was borrowed!!
What is the cost of a "real good search engine"?
Has anybody ever asked the readers of this forum if anybody is capable of producing a search facility??
Answers on a post card please.

Drebbel ,if you look down the topic list you will see that I have already discussed this with Neal.

Oh Linton, I am so sorry I replied to your questions in a non-perfect way. What was I thinking even trying to provide an answer. I am not sure if you are being insulting, funny, smart, or just normal. But it is good to hear you are already in contact with Neal on the issue. That way I can stay out.

:arrgh!:

Would you point me in the direction of the help as I cannot see it!I have asked a number of questions and neither of you have answered them. That is pretty annoying as well and we still have not produced an answer to this problem.
How much does a search facility cost???

Perhaps you would contact the person this was originally addressed to,drag him away from SH4 and ask him?I would be prepared to give a donation to help fund a search engine and perhaps Drebbel and you Gizmoe would do the same .

Send Neal a PM or wait until he replies here.

Lol, yeah, drag me away from SH4 is right :)

I agree, I need to fix the search, just has not been on the top of my priority list. As Drebbel said, we experienced some awful server problems about a year ago, and disabling the phpBB search was one the desperate attempts by me to avoid adding more server ram. In the end, I had to get the additional ram anyway. Now that SH4 is reviewed, I will make a real effort this next weekend to put the search function back in the archives. It may not be that hard, I will have to check and remember what I did last year.
