Judges' comments:
This picture says so much by saying so little. This is what a sailor
loves. Not just a warship, but also the sea. The way the U-boat and the
sea are complementing each other is wonderful. You know the purpose of
the vessel: war, but you are also given the feeling of beauty as she
rides the waves. This is a great picture. -- Don Meadows, author Of
Ice and SteelA very nice picture. We liked the gloomy, cold
submarine feeling coming from it. -- Peter Toth & Botond Szalacsi, Eidos
Hungary, Battlestations: Pacific
The waves and lighting really catch my attention.
Looks very subtle, but at the same time stormy; it's not too busy.
-- Vickie Stevens, artist
This reminded me of the sea effect of a submarine on the surface in a
typhoon --- climbing to the crest of a wave before falling into the
trough ahead. I got the feel of the seas and their power from
the painting. The windswept water was very realistic as was the
submarine in that turbulent environment. -- Capt. Zeke Zellmer, US
Cavalla officer WWII
I like the lighting on the boat, water, and sky. The boat really
looks like it is underway, and getting tossed around. More than any
other entry, this image puts me in the moment. I would enjoy looking at
it
often, if it were on my desktop. Hey wait, now it *is* on my desktop!
-- Dave Bringhurst, Lead developer Silent Hunter II
I really like this one because it's the only one that makes me feel
the U-boat out on the sea. I can feel the cold, the splash on the bow
and on the sides. -- Spence Burnham, artist, Submarine Almanac
The composition in this one is straight-forward but manages to be
dramatic. The image is great -- nice color, detail, wind effects. It
takes me out into the North Atlantic more than any other image. -- Mike
Jones, creator of Aces of the Deep
Depicts the boat as solitary and strong! Arrangement of sky and seas
provides a sense of the forces of Nature. -- R. F. Hoffman, Lt. USNR
(WWII)
Captures the feel of the North Atlantic. -- Charles Hinman, Director
of Education & Outreach, USS Bowfin submarine memorial museum

Second Place

The looming bow of the
U-boat creates a powerful visual effect, but - for me - the real
strength of this image lies in the elements from which it was crafted.
This entire piece is a study in contrasts. The blueprints create a sense
of period and mechanical precision that runs into instant conflict with
the (obviously) more modern color photograph and the battered hull
plates of the vessel in its current state. Also, the blueprints mark
this U-boat as a killing machine, but the photo demonstrates just as
clearly that it’s now a museum relic, rather than an engine of war. --
Jeff Edwards, author Torpedo, The Seventh Angel
Another solid effort with impressive
attention to detail.-- Andy Mahood - PC Gamer Sim Columnist
The creativity in this work is amazing.
The picture works. The contrast of the parchment look and the color of
the U-boat is a natural draw for the eye. -- Don Meadows, author
Of Ice and Steel
Composition is nice. Would have
preferred to see more work put into the photo. Maybe a gradient where
the submarine comes out of an old photo and into the real world. It
would make nice PC wallpaper for submarine fans... -- Spence Burnham,
artist, Submarine Almanac
Quality of layout is evident. Nice
palette and I really like how the photo frame makes the subs prow pop
out. -- Mike Jones, creator of Aces of the Deep
We liked the idea of merging the
picture with a blueprint, and the solution is also great. -- Peter Toth
& Botond Szalacsi, Eidos Hungary, Battlestations: Pacific

Third Place

Kit Walker |
The design, especially the
color, seems surreal and cold. The overall effect - the bubbling makes
it seem real and alive, calling attention to the victory and death,
which I see as the themes. -- John R. Hindinger, author Rogue Trident
This one hollers "wallpaper". That's meant as a compliment. Some of the
other entries are very good but just don't seem like they fit well as
wallpaper. The intense chromatic blue adds drama. Love the water bubbles
positioning and the contrast of the deck gun on the deck. You can just
see the sub's victim making that wilting descent followed by the steel
hitting the surface floor. -- Doug "guod" Atkinson, SimHQ
A good visual from a perspective showing open-minded thinking. The
survivor of a contest and the target. I especially like the coloration
and fades. -- Wayne Frey, author Russian Submarines
Unusual colors but a nice overall effect. Good view on the sunk
merchant in the background.-- Gudmundur Helgason, uboat.net

Fourth
Place

This obviously is handmade and took quite a bit of
talent and time, which always speaks to me. It also has a neat
combination of subsim elements and I really like the artistic, almost
comic book, style. -- Valerie Stevens, artist This image is
reminiscent of the stylized ‘war art’ symbolism favored by the Office of
War Information in the early 1940s. The over-saturated colors and the
dramatic facial expressions of the Sailors would look at home on a World
War II recruiting poster. -- Jeff Edwards,
author Torpedo, The Seventh Angel
Tells the story of the ever present threat of finality of life
aboard. The expressions on the faces are great – not fear – but
apprehension. -- R. F. Hoffman, Lt. USNR (WWII)

Notable mention
 |
This was the one you said was made from scratch, which I
couldn't even tell, and that's pretty amazing in itself. It's very well
constructed, and pays attention to detail and shadows. -- Valerie
Stevens, artist |
 |
The ocean effect is great - almost as if we're in the
wake of the U-boat. In fact, I'd have preferred to see the stern of the
U-boat rather than the men, or at least the hint of the U-boat (other
than a wake) to give a sense of context. --
Spence Burnham, artist, Submarine Almanac
|
 |
Love the background, the positioning of the bubbles, the
translucent typography "SUBSIM". The chrome is well rendered as is the
color of the dial face and the needle. -- Doug "guod" Atkinson, SimHQ |
 |
Very vibrant. Very realistic! It's very nice. Makes me
think like, the submarine is being anti-stereotypical, riding AWAY from
the sunset instead of towards. I could definitely see myself using
something like this picture as my wallpaper. -- Vickie Stevens, artist |
 |
Wonderful contrast and somewhat haunting. There is
subtle action that asks what is happening? Is the U-boat attacking or
being attacked? The use of the subtle colors is perfect. This is one I
would gladly hang on my wall. -- Don Meadows, author Of Ice and Steel |
